Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a reddish brown with little head and no lacing. The aroma is toffee, and pine and earthy hops. The flavor is bitter and a little funky. The palate is medium with a little carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, this is a dark, hoppy ale, but it lacks complexity and balance.

Earthy, moss and clay nose. Caramel is also present. Cloudy copper, thin yellow head, minimal lacing. Dry clay and leaves flavor. Finish is subtle caramel sweetness. Typical Rogue maltiness. No where near as hoppy or delicious as Saint Rogue Red.

Amber Ale doesn’t fittingly describe Santa’s Private Reserve Ale. I mean, Saint Rogue Red is one hell of a hoppy American Red Ale, but to up the ante and simply have it labeled Amber Ale seems a tad lacking. This beer drips dry, northwestern US hoppy goodness, only to be braced against IBU overload by sweet, bread-dough malts and good ol’ reliable Pacman yeast. One of my favorite seasonals, a nice alternative to the spice racks and cookie jars masquerading as six packs on beer shelves this time of year. (1/09)

Bottle at a tasting. Thanks zvikar. Hazy amber. Aroma of resinous hops, some pine and some caramel. Flavor has a bit of malty, slightly cookie-ish and caramelly sweetness and a a bitter finish with piney hops. Medium-bodied.

At a tasting, thanks zvikar, big stable head with lots of lacing, medium brown colour, aroma of strawberry jam, peach, brown sugar and apple pie, flavour of jam with a herbal bitterness and touches of dried fruits. Balanced and quite good.

12oz bottle. Ruby red-brown. Thin, steady, off-white head. Lots of citrus tones in the aroma. A nice, well done hoppy Amber. On the fullest side of medium-bodied, this remains pretty clean and refreshing even with all the flavor. Fruity vanilla tones, caramel, orange. A unique, well-executed beer.

Draught at Tadgs. Nice big citrus aroma, great hops, with gumballs and fruit. Shiny, bright red. Pretty. Flavor is super metallic, mainly iron, with grassy and citrus hops, slightly earthy, and cherry and gumball. Big bitter finish. There is way too much metal flavor here. Strange and unbalanced. Not pleasant once you drink it, though nice to sniff and look at.

I enjoyed this at Delilah’s 12th annual Winter Beer Tasting in Chicago, IL. Appearance somewhat clear copper with a thin white head. Aroma malty with slight yeast backing, not bad. Taste a little thin, some off flavors, not my favorite of the tasting event.

22 oz. bottle, pours dark amber with a big white head. Aroma of dry caramel malt. Flavour is essentially the same, with a dry finish. This is not very different from American Amber. Solid.
