Pale, Bitter, Hoppy – Large amounts of hops deliver an intense piney and citrusy aroma and flavour in a bitter, easy drinking Pale Ale. Although brewing in Britain was already established when the Romans arrived in 54BC, by the time they built the Roman Fort ‘Deva Victrix’ in 79AD, on what is now considered ‘Chester’, Roman soldiers had helped to develop brewing and were sustaining themselves on English ale. Since this was before the introduction of hops, we wanted to brew a beer that really showcased the hop presence, celebrating beer in the 21st century.

Third of a pint on 21st Sep 2020 in the brewhouse at Chester, part of a three beer flight. Light haze to the golden pour, hand-pulled cask, thin white head. Not in great condition really, fruity front to the nose and taste with some semi-sweet maltiness for balance.

Cask, third shared with Finn at the brewhouse. Covering white hed, unclear golden, dotted spots. Mid-sweet smell of dried fruits and caramel. Mixed taste of apricot and caramel malts. More sweet than bitter to the ending. Medium bodied. Satisfying. (Chester 26.01.2020).

Cask at the Chester location. Pours a clearr deep gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has lots of straw and hay with a bit of leaves underlying. Flavor is mainly straw and hay with a faint swee grain backing.

Amber, clear, dense off white head
Aroma of light pale malt, dab of zest, subdued
Taste of soft sweet pale malts, very soft hops, too little hops in this, bland flavour
Palate - Quite sweet, should be more bitter if more hops put in, bit oily, clean finish, OK
Overall - Flavour too subdued, too little hops makes a dull beer
