American Saison Ale (Smokestack Series)

When our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in fermenter number seven. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

With its balance, carbonation, and complex flavor profile, Tank 7 is one of the ultimate food-pairing beers in existence. But don't just take our word for it, esteemed chefs from around the country agree. We've sat down with a bunch of them and asked them seven questions over a Tank 7.

Sample from draft at Johnny's in Castricum (with Jan and Wilma). Light yelow color, white head, a very nice taste. I didn't expect this high abv in this beer.

Sample at de konicks, antwerp. Yellow color clear, white head with decent lacing. Aroma is spiced, fruity, with pear juice, sweet orange and melon. Light on the grains, some grass, hay. There are some burning notes in the finish but ABV doesnโ€™t seem so high. Taste sui, soft carbonation, smooth finish. But my preference in the style honestly by quite good.

A bit sweet for a Saison, grassy and bright but with a heavy caramel-clove undercurrent that feels too prominent for the style. Banana and grapefruit pop up in the middle, and the finish brings out a dry bready yeastiness, but still comes across too thick and boozy for a great farmhouse ale. Still finished the pint rather quickly, though.
