Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create an almost opaque, wonderfully silky and smooth textured ale with a complex medium dry palate and bittersweet finish.

0,355L bottle. Pours dark brown with light brown head. The head stays. Aroma is roast, fruits, malt, sour notes. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fruits, raisins, apples, dark chocolate. Finish is dry bitter. Overall: very enjoyable brew. For some odd reason English can make nice flavorful lower ABV brews and others (mostly) can’t.

550ml bottle into pint glass (room temperature). Nose is milk chocolate with slight acid. Not quite opague, slightly ruby. Small white head. Full-bodied with creamy texture. There’s a beautiful sweet note in the taste that is always English to me. Finish is a low-level lingering chocolate with a touch of lactic acid. . Great beer from a great brewery.

Bottle from Drinkshop. Aroma dried fruits, roasted, light solventy alcohols. Very dark brown colour, head disappearing pretty quickly. Taste again shows dried fruits, dark roasted malt character. That is about all. The beer is rather dry, almost no sweetness to speak of. Rather easily drinkable. Quite well balanced, good beer.

Opaque reddish-black beer with a head which pours thick but soon dissipates. Light, chocolatey malt aroma. Flavour is chocolate, malt and fruit. It’s smooth, rich and almost creamy. It’s a fairly standard stout but it’s a brilliant example of the type. Lovely.

500ml bottle. Deep black with a thick off white head. Creamy aroma, with some dried fruit coming through. Taste is soft and creamy, sweet with hints of dark chocolate and coffee. Not spectacular, but a very nice stout

Bottle, 0.55l. Pours opaque dark brown with thick soapy brown head and sparkling appearance. Aroma of grass, mild roasted malt, chocolate and light smoke. Taste starts with light sweet licorice and cereals, follows by sweet roasted malt and grass, mouthfeel is rather dry, while finish is mild bitter. Medium body, creamy texture and soft carbonation in palate. This is a true fathers’ support to lactating mothers...
