Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create an almost opaque, wonderfully silky and smooth textured ale with a complex medium dry palate and bittersweet finish.

Nice black color with inch thick tan head and red highlight. Aroma is roasted malt, a bit sweet prunes. Taste is dry, roasty, a bit fruity. Silky mouthfeel. Overall quite nice, not too heavy, but the malts are extreme. Well-priced.

Negra opaca. Escasa espuma ocre. Fuerte aroma a madera, café y ligeramente a hierbabuena. Mucho cuerpo y textura cremosa, con carbonatacion media. Muy sabrosa, mezclando tabaco, caramelo, café.. Final entre dulce y amargo. Excelente.

Bottle shared with Sarah at the Angel in Tottenham court rd. Dark mahogany brown with reddy hues and a lasting frothy mid tan head. Dry roast, light sweetness, charcoal, choc, little coconut shavings. Flavour is earthy dry roast, coal, little sweetness, dried fruit, earthymess. Palate is creamy, highish carbonation, semi sweet, moderate carbonation. Velvety on the tongue. Really good.

Bottle from Foods Plus, Plaistow NH. Aroma is a malty mix of bread dough and cocoa. Appears a clear dark-reddish brown--almost black/opaque. Frothy off-white head with fair staying power and lacing. One attribute this beer has that isn’t often rated is its great SOUND--from the great pour to the crackling of the dissipating head. Taste is medium sweet with mild bitterness and hints of chocolate. Medium to full-bodied with creamy smooth feel, soft carbonation and awesome, long finish. There is much going on with this beer on many levels which makes it extremely enjoyable and deserving of its high rating.

Old rating. Chocolate malts, coffee and cream on the nose. More of the same on the palate. Rich and creamy mouthfeel and goes down smooth. One of my favorite British stouts. --- Beer merged from original tick of Oatmeal Stout on 10 Jun 2017 at 12:14

0,55 bottle consumed in Kosovo with huge thanks to Jacquie, my English friend. Pours black with brown reflexes, small ivory foamy head. Nose: roasted coffee beans, hidden fresh cheese. Mouth: cold frappe coffee, balanced and neutral bitterness. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

0,355 l bottle, bought at Grebnhan´s, Bremen. Pours out BLACK with a big head. Berriefruits and coffee on the nose. Taste starts with more coffee, then it´s gonna be sweet berriefruits. Later shortly with coffee followed by the fruity sweetness. Little bit too sweet. Dry dark choco aftertaste. Not that heavy stuff.
