Chicory Stout

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma was roasty, lightly smoky and malty. The flavor was lightly bitter and roasty with noticable chicory and a strange blending of flavors I could not quite identify yet found vaguely nauseating. Definitely not my style.

Strong dark aroma of almost coffee. Opaque brown/black color with a head that ringed rapidly. Medium bodied at least. Creamy carbonation. A coffee flavor with some bitter and strange veg notes. Arguably some smokiness. Dark roasted sweet malt, and some balancing bitter. The finish is dry and coffee like. Overall it is tasty, and about as refreshing as a stout could possibly be.

Black,tiny brown head immediately fades to nada.Roasty alc nose.Light roast, sweet, hint of coffee. Disappointing, thin. Nothing like I expected, why bother. The head dissipated very quickly, leaving a flat lifeless beer.

Very deep brown with a small, dark tan head. Sweet coffee malts, molasses, and chocolate. Flavors of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, some grassy hops, and roasted malts. Sorta bitter ending, though not very lasting. Medium, smooth body. Not a "look what I can do," type of stout; just solid. Good and easy drinking.

I put the tasting of this off for a while but then I found it at Vintage Estates in Boardman for $1.5 in a 12 oz brown bottle. I think DFH is approaching cheapdark standards. As good as Bell’s Kalamazoo and Sierra Nevada Stout, but not as good as Yards Love Stout. Very opaque dark but not thick or syrupy appearing. Interesting initial flavor that reminds me of chocolate flavored wet rope. Like nothing I’ve tased before the other beers that I can recall. Spice seems to quell an ever present background bitterness. Smooth and mellow palate that is not offensive though possessess burned tree bark flavors. As mild as many sweet stouts I’ve taseted. Decent carbonation for a stout. Cold coffeelike. Nice description on the front of the bottle. Friendly at first and then gets just a little ornery.

Bottle. A deep chocolate, brown sugar and coffee malt aroma. Opaque black with small head. Slightly sweet caramel and chicory (light grassy coffee) flavor with a moderate acidic bite. Mild hops finish with a very nice chocolate malt aftertaste.. An extremely nice sipping stout.

bottle - Pours very dark brown with a thin, fizzy head. It has a roast malt aroma with I think a hint of spice. Dark roast coffee noted malt leads the flavor with milds hops that’s just enough to balance it alright. It seems a tad light for a stout.

Some chocolate comes through, as does the coffee. A dark black beer, but only a medium body. This is a solid coffee stout, but I wish I could pick up on the hickory.

Bottle: Dark brown pour with a smaller tan head. Taste is a mild intensity of coffee, roasted malt, chocolates, and subtle fruity tones. Very well balanced, silky, and smooth.
