Fast on the heels of our fantasticly reformulated Hops Infusion, our brewers have picked up the gauntlet and brewed a Double IPA using exclusively Simcoe(R) Hops! This west coast Hops was created in 2000 by Select Botanicals, Inc. and carries a fantastic flavor profile abounding with citrusy-grapefruit, piney, resiny notes that pushes this Double IPA over the top. 9.0% ABV in the brew gives it a nice malt foundation as well.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a deep reddish color ale with a big foamy head with good retention. Aroma of citrus hops is pretty intense and covers the malt. Taste is also dominated by huge fresh citrus hops. Malt is certainly present but hard to taste with all the hops in there. Body is above average and beer is not over filtrated. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall, while this IIPA is very enjoyable, a better balance between malt and hops would have provided more enjoyment on my part.

Bottle "Over the top" is right! Nice deep orange/amber with a huge sticky head that stayed in glops on the side of the glas as I drank it down. Intense sweet tangerine, grapefruity aroma. Hefty carmel rich malt body and lots of cirtusy bittering. Quite strong and very delicious. This beer is going to make me look for more Simcoe(R) IPAs.
Terrific !

(Bottled, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Colour is amber, slightly hazy, with a foamy off-white head. Nose is fruity, violently but beautifully hoppy with citrus (pink grapefruit, blood oranges) and lots of pine needles. Taste is fruity, still very hoppy with grapefruity (both yellow and pink), pine needles and a long brilliantly hoppy finish (it followed me all the way home for 35 minutes on the tube). Medium to full body. It’s obviously a bit sweet, but the sweetness never takes over, it’s nicely balanced by the bitterness and the underlying body. Would I call this very complex? No, definitely not. It might be more balanced as well. But still, being a hop head, I simply can’t resist this. Lovely stuff!

2006 bomber consumed on 8/3/06.
Lovely appearance, huge, sticky lacing in rings, immense beige head is very well-retained. Liquid is a strong bronze-copper color, with high clarity and plenty of bubbles.
Bone dry, bitter nose, shows heavy pine resin, very very sparse malts, dextrinous and well-attenuated. But nothing juicy, overly fruity or even very tropical. Just densely piney-citric and heavily aggressive. Medium strength, too, dosent really pour forth with a huge burst of aroma.
Ack, this is just another unbalanced, heavily hopped DIPA. Not as bad as Moylans Hopsickle, but along those lines. Pine, citrus and very dry orange and grapefruit rind are very bitter. Much more IBU/apparent bitterness than actual juicy hop flavor. The body is still strong and dextrinous (though ultimately, filtered), but very lacking in actual malt flavor/complexity. Plenty of yeast stink too, though the alcohol is well-concealed. Couldn’t finish the bomber.

[Bottled at Olivert Twist, Stockholm] Hazy reddish brown, lasting creamy head. Powerful aroma of sweaty grapefruits and lingonberry. Fairly sweet with lots of malt and reasonably soft mouthfeel. Though hop dominated alcohol plays a significant part - lingonberries are strikingly evident. Very bitter finish with plenty of salty licorice and tar. A good one.

I was looking forward to trying this one given the recent hype about it. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a chestnut color with a large tan head. The aroma is fruity and rather peppery hops. The flavor is strong fruity , floral and peppery hops. There is an earthy undertone. There is an off flavor to the hops that is faintly unpleasant. The malt presence is a bit lacking and the hops totally overwhelm

Deep gold with a thick, creamy off-white head. Loads of pine and orange citrus in the aroma. One dimensional hop flavor that seemed a bit dull to me.

Long story here. So I got this as a bomber at Halftime but left it in the fridge of my girlfriends house. Been trying to not drink it b/c of that but could not resist at Barcade as my next beer in my journey of the day. Another thing is I was on the Sixpoint tour and was told how Simcoe is the "hot" hop, and everybody is going gaga over it. So here we go. Pours a translucent dark copper with a small head into a 10 oz wine glass. Cannot see through the beer. Smells like...hum...i dont know...maybe Simcoe hops - duh. The taste however was also very creamy but still an all hop beer. I mean its a very good Double IPA but are we ever going to get more creative here. I mean where is the Double Amarillo IPA?
