Porters were invented as a fortifying drink for the rough-and-tumble working class of London’s bustling markets. It was brewed for good folks with calluses on their hands, doing work that needed to be done. We salute those working-class heroes with our classic Porter, brewed in the hop-forward American style and featuring a depth of malt flavor and complexity with roasted notes of black coffee and cocoa.

Bottle. Cloudy deep brown. Beige head. Aroma & taste: caramel, treacle, dried fruit. Light to medium body. Light sweet. Strange for an American Porter. Something must be wrong with the bottle.

Bottle 33 cl, bb 03.2017. Deep rad, clear with a minimal off white head. Ligth roasted malt aroma, caramel and some dark fruit sense. Medium bitter taste with a medium malt end. Expected more.

Sampled from 0.355 l bottle. Clear, very dark red to brown with a frothy, beige head. Sweetish, quite roasty-malty aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and hints of hazelnut. Moderately sweet, quite roasty-malty taste of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and hazelnut, followed by a medium long, quite roasty-bitter, very dry finish. Almost medium-bodied, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Tasty!

A rounded, modest porter, leaning more English than robust, kicking up notes of roasted chocolate and a mild bready undertone without ever growing sweet or heavy. Pours an acceptable brown, yet the head never really comes through, and the nose is mostly cocoa. Taste doesn’t grow much beyond the initial chocolate, maybe developing a hint of mocha bitterness as it opens up, slight cherry and coffee on the back end. Finishes semisweet with a welcome hop presence. A classic porter, one that hooked me on the style, but a bit dated and slight now.

This review was imported from my RateBeer ratings.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a dirty-tan head that is frothy and fades slowly. Smells of chocolate and coffee are very prominent, but there are undertones of caramel too. The initial taste is a slightly bitter with a bit of a metallic tinge. Which is a bit unsettling, because the aromas tend to indicate you’re about to drink something sweet. It is medium-bodied with average carbonation, and a slightly bitter finish.

Overall, a beer that I like and will probably buy again.
