Porters were invented as a fortifying drink for the rough-and-tumble working class of London’s bustling markets. It was brewed for good folks with calluses on their hands, doing work that needed to be done. We salute those working-class heroes with our classic Porter, brewed in the hop-forward American style and featuring a depth of malt flavor and complexity with roasted notes of black coffee and cocoa.

Pours dark brown from the bottle. The large tan head is foamy, and rapidly settles. The aroma is milk chocolate up front, but underlayered with tinges of way overripe plum. The taste starts lightly bitter, metallic, with notes of chocolate, charcoal, and light tartness. Finishes with a bitter sour taste that leaves an overall one dimensional impression. Also unimpressive is the body, which is a touch thinner than I would like. Combined with faint hints of alcohol and a charcoal ash flavor, the brew left me feeling thirsty. Reading this back it all sounds pretty dire, but it’s not an entirely bad beer. It’s very finishable, and the aroma is nice, but there are a lot of flaws here.

330ml bottle bought @Eataly (Rome) with Pippi. Bruna, impenetrabile, schiuma color cappuccino molto persistente. Al naso sentori di malti tostati, caffè di torrefazione, cioccolato fondente, melassa. In bocca è meravigliosamente bilanciata, una grandissima bevuta, attacco dolce con finale amaro perfetto. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Gran birra!

355ml bottle into shaker. Looks great, deep mahogany red/brown with two finger tan coloured head. Nose is distant dark chocolate and cocoa. Smooth texture, taste follows nose. Finish has fruity tang undercutting the smokiness. Easy to drink, typical porter.
