Schmankerl means ‘delicacy’ or ‘treat’ in the Bavarian dialect. In order to achieve the classic Hefeweizen character we don’t use generic dried yeast but propagate a genuine Bavarian strain ourselves. Schmankerl is a cloudy wheat beer with notes of banana and cloves. The blue and white label reflects Bavarian colours, the region that produces the most diverse beers in Germany.

Hops: German Tettnanger and British Admiral

Bottle split at Scopey’s 5K Extravaganza of Oompah Band meets doorbell music, thanks to Don Paulo - 15/02/14. Hazed orange yellow with a moderate off white covering. Nose is yeast, bitter orange, straw, mandarin, spice. Taste comprises clove, yeast, wheaten bread, bitter orange, light toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough for style but no Craig Alan !

Gusher. Bottle. It pours cloudy golden with a thick white head. The nose is doughy, earth, toast, wheat and kitty litter. The taste is wheat, orange peel, earth, dough, grapefruit, cat litter and light candy with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Alright.

50cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - hazy and golden with a generous frothy, white head. Nose - quite dry and not getting the expected banana and cloves. It’s quite yeasty and bready generally. Taste - much the same - it could be more generous. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a dry finish that is refreshing but on the edge of being astringent. Overall - not sure I realised that this was going to be a wheat ale rather than a hefeweizen, but was disappointed not to get the hefeweizen notes. Anyway, it’s a solid citizen but for me the weakest beer from Top Out yet.

500ml bottle from Appellation Wines, Dalry. Cheers Ash! Pours hazy golden yellow, thick white head. Was expecting banana/clove aromas, but nothing like that going on. Bread/hay definitely, and a pronounced yeastiness, but not in a Germanic Wheat Beer way. Nice texture, creamy. Some lemon coming through as it goes down. Enjoyable.

Bottle from Cornelius. Hazy golden body with a medium white head. Lively carbonation. Excellent lacing. Muted aroma of oranges, chalky wheat, bread and grass. Lovely flavour of white pepper, underripe pear, tangerine and a hint of salt. Initially sweet with a bitter, slightly spicy finish. Medium body with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Nice carbonation fizz. Very tasty.
