This is a tremendously delicious, textural, and fizzy county ale, bright gold colour, citric and sour, reminiscent of a good champagne or lambic but in a class all its own.

Fantôme – Golden ale, 8% alc. by volume, with a wonderfully musty and characterful aroma. There are many drinkers out there who believe this is the “Nectar of the Gods.” Certainly no other brewer makes beer like this, in Belgium or anywhere. How many beers of 8% plus offer such fresh fruitiness? A solid Belgian saison beer at its base, with an unusual overlay of fruitiness.

Bottle. Massive gusher, hazy orange with very big fluffy white head. Sweet malts, cloves, citrus, banana, peach yoghurt, syrupy and cake. Very sweet with light tart touch and bitter finish. Medium bodied with sticky feel. Too sweet, and the gushing wildness doesn’t help, but nice aroma.

Aromas of spice and lemon, with a tartness and mustiness in the background. Hazy pale gold with a white head that quickly falls to a ring around the glass of small bubbles. Slight lacing down the sides. Taste is fruity and acidic tartness. Lemon in moderate amounts on the back palate. Malt is haylike and fresh. Yeast has rustic barnyard characteristics. Finishes dry and quickly.

Bottle at home. Pours a hazy orange colour with a soap-like, off-white head. A little sweet aroma of citrus, bread, alcohol, dried apricot and some caramel and spices. Fruity flavour with dried fruit, spices and alcohol. Has a rich and slick mouth feel. A malty saison with some spicy touches and hops in the background. A strange ale but grows on me. Maybe a great food beer.

Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton, Manchester. Hazy gold looks with a generous frothy white head. Nose revealed lemon, grass, straw, spice and funk. Wonderful fruitiness unfolded in the flavour with lemon and green apple the main protagonists. Both sweet and sour, this was clean, smooth and oh so drinkable. ABV nowhere to be seen. Some bitterness emerged as affairs dried out towards the finish. Elegant and poised. The comparison to champagne in the description is certainly apt, this is a fantastic and unique beer that is well worthy of a Top 10 berth and also brings up my birth year rate (1973). Salut !

Bottle. Pours hazy light golden with an enormous thick creamy head. Aroma is vinegar, lemon peel and honey. Creamy body with average carbonation. Flavour is tart with yeast, wood and apple cider vinegar, as well as notes of honey and grain. Sour wooden, funky finish.
