Nils Oscar Imperial Stout is brewed only in a limited edition. Also Nils Oscar Imperial Stout was awarded as the best beer in the world. This beer is brewed with many varieties of hops and malt, nothing saved to make the stout full of character. Imperial Stout is best enjoyed combined with the dessert but works wonderfully with oysters. The Nils Oscar Imperial Stout can be enjoyed today but preferably mature a couple of years.

Deep pitch black coloured body, completely opaque with a thin and fast dying tan head. Some brown transparency gets through on the side of the glass, but a bunch of bubbles rising from the sides are also noticeable - nice! Aroma of potent, deep, roasted malt, coffee, nuts and star anise. Some meaty and mushroomy scents also come out too - after the sweetness. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong assertive roasted malt up front fading to a complex meaty, spicey and nutty finish. Aftertaste is odd - effervescent then fading to a stillness, with more malt and coffee than anything else. Overall, this is an odd beer - I’m all for the Foreign style instead of the Imperial, but it just doesn’t work - it’s missing too much character, after the smell was so promising. Worth trying, I suppose - but I’d rather have pretty much any other Foreign over this one! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Knightly Spirits in Orlando, Florida on 15-February-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 23-March-2009.

Draught (St Urho’s, Helsinki) - Very dark brown, almost black in colour. Chocolate and coffee in the aroma with light hops. Tasty hoppy and chocolatey taste wih coffee and a hoppy element in the finish. Very nice.

(Draught at St. Urho’s Pub Porter Days ’09) Black. Medium sized tan coloured head. Liquorice and coffee in aroma. Full bodied and dry palate. Coffee, liquorice, roastedness, bitterness and sweetness in taste. Liquorice and bitterness in aftertaste.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color color stout with a medium foamy head with good retention and very good lacing. Aroma of lightly sweet black chocolate with notes of dry roasted malt. Taste is a nice combination between some back chocolate with lightly sweet dry coffee notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done but creamier body would have improve enjoyment of this beer.

Brown bottle, 33 cl, best before 14 NOV, via Importations Privées Bièropholie, savoured on January 28 2009; eye: black, opaque, tiny ring of cappuccino head, no lacing; nose: roasted malt, molasses, liquorice, light soy sauce, cocoa dust, dark chocolate; mouth: roasted malt, lots of liquorice, I get a bit hops which means that there is probably way more than I think, strong coffee, dark chocolate, a bit of burnt malt, finale in roasted malt with a good presence of liquorice, quite a bit of acridness, medium-full body, slightly oily texture, astringency, mildly bitter, average carbonation, lactic; overall: quite likable FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 33 cl, meilleure avant 14 NOV, via Importations Privées Bièropholie, savourée le 28 janvier 2009; œil : noire, opaque, petit anneau de mousse cappuccino, pas de dentelle; nez : malt rôti, mélasse, réglisse, léger sauce soya, poussière de cacao, chocolat noir; bouche : malt rôti, pas mal de réglisse, je perçois un peu de houblon ce qui veut probablement dire qu’il y en a beaucoup plus que je pense, café fort, chocolat noir, un peu de malt brûlé, finale en malt rôti avec une bonne présence de réglisse, pas mal d’âcreté, corps moyen-corsé, texture légèrement huileuse, astringence, moyennement amère, carbonatation moyenne, lactique; en résumé : bien aimé

Sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective Stout tasting on 01/16/09. This beer is nearly black with with a thin light tan head that diminishes steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. The aroma is moderately roasty malt and chocolate. Medium, dry body with flavors of roasted coffee and cocoa. Mild hops bite as well. The finish is burnt malt and coffee with a lightly bitter hops aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Bottle from a mixed case via Phil L’s Cave Direct, Beer Merchants Sept 08 Pours very dark brown with beige head. Chocolate, coffee and a real sweetness mark this one out, its an ok beer but nothing special.

Bottle. Black beer with strongish head. The aroma is deeply roasted and the flavour is deeply roasted and bitter. Overall a very nice deeply roasted beer.
