Cask@GBBF 2010. Pitch black beer with a light head. The aroma is fruity and port like, and the flavour is rich and port like. Overall a good well conceived beer.

I purchased this for $16 for a single bottle from a liquor store in the San Diego area, consumed with a friend in Portland, OR. When I purchased this, it was something my future wife just threw in the basket because the RateBeer small advertisement next to it said 100 rating. When I was in line, I saw the price and almost put it back. I’m very happy I didn’t! Aroma consisted of brandy, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, very sweet and it felt like there was 1000 aromas going on at the same time. Appearance is black with a thin brown head. Taste consisted of chocolate, very sweet, alcohol is definitely in the mix with a bourbon base, coconut, etc. As with the aroma, there’s about 1000 things going on with this beer and it’s very smooth...the ingredients aren’t fighting each other. Very happy that I was able to have this.

Location: Bottle at Max and Andy's Fantasy Tasting, 5/1/10

Aroma: Nose was tons of bourbon (read: booze, booze, and more booze), vanilla, and some wood
Appearance: It pours an oily black color with a brown head and a bit of lace
Flavor: The taste is sweet and malty with a lots of bourbon flavor
Palate: This one is on the oily side, thick, heavy, and even a little chewy
Overall Impression: This beer was alright, but I just found it to be too boozy for my personal taste. I have no qualms with many liking it more then I, and perhaps with more age it would have been more to my liking, but at this point in time it was just too much bourbon for me, if I want to drink bourbon, I wouldn't have opened a beer. Anyway, I can see the appeal, and I still believe it deserves a solid score, just not one as spectacular as many have given it.

Bottle from Beermerchants.com. Jet black pour with no head. Low carbonation. Rich aromas of dark chocolate, raisins, bourbon, very vinous. Dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, smooth bourbon feel, really warms the throat. Pleasing alcohol burn sweetness. Very smooth caresses the throat as it slides down. Vinous, sweet throat warming finish. Definately one to take your time over. Excellent.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Murky chocolate-brown body, thin buff head. Heavy, rich nose, with tannic oak and strong bourbon, concentrated raisins and prunes, heavy, burnt caramel, molasses, and alcohol. The alcohol packs serious heat in the body, which is dominated by oak and bourbon, backed by chocolate, prune, and raisin. Rich but not overly viscous. The long medicinal, licorice/tobacco finish becomes tiresome after a few sips. That flaw aside, this is a very nice beer.

2009 Bottle from Kris Wines, London. Shared with Slothez on the Amsterdam ferry. Nice looking bottle and an aptly named beer. Like pouring out a glass of Texas tea. Nose had vanilla, dark chocolate, liquorice and bourbon. Slid down luxuriously full, smooth and warming. Flavour was quite sweet, with all the elements from the aroma and more. Woody notes jostled with booze, roasted malt, fruit and spices. Terrific lingering bitter finish. Top class stuff.

Bottle with special thanks to coyotehunter for sharing. We’ve put this off the last few meetings, so here it is. Pours a dark brown with a tan head and aromas that are a bit on the weak side as far as I’m concerned. I’m in the minority on this, but all I’m picking up are some faint cardboard, brown sugar and booze. Flavors are pretty sweet and boozy... kind of a brown sugar and booze with a little bit of a sour edge to the finish. Didn’t see that coming and it makes things interesting. Kind of a not-quite-ripe plum flavor. Mouthfeel is thin, yet sticky. Finish is boozy and slightly sour.
