After the ‘Zatte’, this is the oldest beer from Brouwerij ‘t IJ. Natte is classed as a ‘dubbel’, a Belgian category of smooth, dark beers. Because we partly use dark malt, Natte has a reddish-brown colour and a smooth, roasted flavour with earthy tones of brown sugar, nuts and plums. Completed with slightly bitter hops, this is a nicely balanced beer and one of the brewery’s classics.

Bottle. Color: Ruby red. Off white head. Taste: Strange mix of burned malt, some kind of herbs and bit metallic. Very difficult to identify. Bit stale.

From bottle. It pours brownish, with low to moderate foam. Aroma shows a complex bouquet, including signs of alcohol, but my current cold doesn’t allow me to fully appreciate. Taste is accordingly, with moderate sweetness, and a good body. Like it! -- rated with beerbasher/winphone

Had my first Natte about 30 years ago, shortly after the brewery’s opening. I didn’t have this in my RB life though, until now. 33 cl bottle @ De Waaghals, A’dam. Mostly clear ruby brown. Light beige head, dense, with good retention. Aroma’s: sweet, fruit, yeasty, a bit banana. Flavor is moderate sweet with light bitterness. Medium bodied. Finishes yeasty, moderate bitter. Still quite nice, but of course I liked it a lot more 30 years ago.

0.33 l bottle from local AH, best before April 2017. Deep red with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, some nuts, a touch of chocolate and a bit of raisins. Sweet and a malty taste of caramel, nuts and some chocolate as well as hints of raisins and honey, followed by a rather short, slighly bitter, a little roasty finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Not that deep, but at least well-balanced and quite tasty.

Amber-brown color with white head. Aroma is earthy-herbal, liquorice. Taste is minty, dark malts, dry. Finish is dry. Ticklish carbonation. Not a fan.
