After the ‘Zatte’, this is the oldest beer from Brouwerij ‘t IJ. Natte is classed as a ‘dubbel’, a Belgian category of smooth, dark beers. Because we partly use dark malt, Natte has a reddish-brown colour and a smooth, roasted flavour with earthy tones of brown sugar, nuts and plums. Completed with slightly bitter hops, this is a nicely balanced beer and one of the brewery’s classics.

15/V/15 - 33cl bottle @ the Abeels (NL) - BB: IX/2015 (2015-627) Thanks to the Abeels for sharing the bottle!

Clear red brown beer, creamy irregular beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: something off, weird, yeast, banana, chemical. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter, unpleasant, very dirty, drain pour!

330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Albert Heijn. BBF 02/2016. Dark hazy red amber, small beige head. Nose is thick cough syrup, caramel malts, herbal, light fish guts umami, sticky, thick, herbal, estery,… Taste is metallic, fish guts, herbal, umami, honey, light bitter herbs, caramel, raisin, taste is a bit hollow, too much fish guts, umami, estery, herbal flavors for me,… Herbal, metallic bitter. Body feel rather thin & metallic. The kind of BE style brewing that I am not a fan of, it lacks a chewy malt body to balance it all, it would have worked better with a solid brown sugar / malty base.

Apparently the second beer from this renowned Dutch brewery, cloudy bronze with thick and frothy, yellowish white, moussy head and aroma of dried fruits, raisins, fondant, yoghurt, sweet cherries, banana, bubblegum, caramel, toasted bread, brown sugar and - at least in the tap version - a certain amount of iron clearly pointing at head stabilizing agents; well-balanced sweetish fruity taste, sweet cherries, banana, hazelnuts with a sourish touch (stronger in the bottle I tasted years ago, likely caused by onsetting infection at that time); nicely caramelly malty with nutty and chocolatey accents, dryish finish of herbal hops with lingering malt sweetness. Very tasty, well-crafted and exemplary dubbel, too bad for the iron in the aroma.
