Thanks to Beerbill for getting this for me, unfortunately this was not a Southampton hit, imo. The pour shows a dark brown color, clear but dark enough that I cannot see through it. Aroma is medicinal butterscotch, not bad and not totally diacetyl. Its a bit more earthy. There is a sweet burnt brown sugar aspect. The medicinal part is bad, the butterscotch is weird, but otherwise it is ok. Flavor is a bit better with more of a caramel aspect and some bark. Has a light sweet aftertaste. In general it is off the mark.
750mL cork and wire, Duvel tasting glass.

750 ml corked caged bottle shared by beastiefan2k. Pour is brown, cordovan, ruby, with a firm one inch off white head. Nice pretty lacing. Aroma of toffee sweetness, smokey peat following close behind. A bit mild, but well integrated. Taste is straw hay caramel toffee, followed by the earthy smokey peatiness which lingers beautifullly. Nice balance of flavors. Palate is medium, decently carbonated, slow finish with nutty peaty lingering. Nice one, thanks Eugene.

Big thanks to Daknole for this one. I think my bottle mentioned 8.5% ABV. Rating number 30. Pours with a huge khaki head over a deep amber colored body. Great retention from the head really a beautiful beer. Aroma of sarsaparilla, earth, caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, persimmons, candied fruits and light scotch (without really noticeable peat). Taste is malty with burnt toffee, chocolate, earthy, prune, alcohol, biscuit, fresh pumpernickel bread, and vanilla torte. Very well crafted. Syrupy mouthfeel and medium carbonation; a very nice beer! Prime candidate for barrel aging in my opinion.

bottle at DLD 2009 ... Deep copper ... sweeet fruity ... little rough toffee malts ... little vanilla ... quite buttery.

Tap at the Publick House - (the bottled version is labeled as 8.5% abv) - I can always count on Southampton to brew a beer that is not only traditional and true to style, but damn delicious, and this one does not disappoint - no smoked malt, but their skill at brewing has imparted that lightly earthy, peaty, mildly smokey quality none-the-less - a pleasant brown sugar sweetness and plumy fruitiness balance this out - sweet, but not overwhelming so, like many in this style - a tiny bit of vegetal character in the finish, but it seems at home with the earthy qualities in place - another nice brew from these guys.
