Bottle at home. Three year old bottle. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a beige head. Sweet and malty aroma of dried fruit, caramel, cola, leather, alcohol, bread and black currants. The flavor is also pretty malty with more leather, wood, caramel and roasted malt. Has a soft and slick mouth feel, medium body and a balanced bitterness. A rich and easy-drinking ale at the same time. Wonderful aroma. I miss the same complexity in the taste.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines, Sheffield. Clear, reddy copper colour. Film and halo of lasting, white head. Fruity, toffee malts. Quite vinous. Some prune and prune juice. Has that stone fruit earthiness. Taste has a light sweetness running through a mostly tart, fruity dry, slightly boozy feel. Palate is a bit thin. Finishes vine fruit tart, and dry.

Botella 33 cl de el c. Inglés Oviedo. Tomado en enero 2002. Lote A hasta abril 2002. Cuerpo medio con 8.5 vol. Especiada y con algo de densidad y sensación alcohólica. No está mal.

In Scotland several times - don’t know why rating been deleted or not. Dark brown wee beige head. Dry roasted malt....

Brilliant clear deep chestnut brown, small frothy beige head, recedes quickly, very light lacing. Rich aroma, sweet roasted malts, dark fruits, brown sugar, light alcoholic. Taste medium to heavy sweet, slightly bitter, roasted coffee, caramel syrup. Full body, soft carbonation, sweetbitter aftertaste, roasted malts till the end, spicy notes, warming alcohol. Pleasant beer though all in all a somewhat one-dimensional.

Classic ’wee heavy’ (so Scotch ale) from the Orkneys, glad I can finally have a taste of this. Pours a clear orangey copper colour with low fizz, supporting a milky, regularly shaped, slightly beige to white head breaking open quickly but to a limited extent - i.e. remaining dense on the edges and leaving a beige veil over the rest of the liquid. Very malty aroma as expected: home made caramel, aromatic and vaguely vanilla-like odour of spring flowers, cashew nuts, hint of bitter chocolate, dried orange peel, brown rhum, peach, biscuit abounding, toasted bread in the morning, cranberry sauce, some oxidized madera and white port notes, hints of banana, honey, marmelade, wet paper. Smoothly fruity onset, peaches, some banana, sweet berries, with a rounded, full but supple, soft mouthfeel, softly carbonated; very light sourish touch balances the sweetness. Rich maltiness ensues, still light on the palate though, very elegant, with a mostly caramel-like character, some nutty and chocolatey accents; finish is mostly malty, sweet but not cloying, with a herbal hops bitterishness, some rhum-like warming alcohol, lingering banana fruitiness and a very mild and gentle roasted touch, but nowhere near the coffee or bitter chocolate flavour you would find in a really roasted bitter beer. In all: no off-flavours, balanced and smooth, with an inviting bouquet. This is indeed a classic in its style.
