McEwan’s Export is perhaps the world’s best-travelled beer. First brewed to quench the thirst of those toiling under the hot Indian sun, it was labelled Export and the name stuck. The sun might not belt down quite the same in Scotland, but we know a refreshing beer when we taste one – Export is today the no.1 supermarket selling ale in in its homeland.
This beer began its life in the 1860s, when its casks would be loaded onto sailing ships for a 5,000-mile journey to India. There it was unloaded on a sun-drenched wharf and sent inland to reward the thirsty workers.
McEwan’s Export does the same noble job today, and is still known worldwide for its hearty character.

500ml can [Thanx Detlef]. Clear amber colour with huge, creamy, lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Bitter hoppy aroma with toasty caramel malty undertones. Taste is monotonous, minimally sweet grainy, slightly watery, bitter hoppy overtones. Without rough edges.

Keg at The Shed, 7 Lady St, Annan DG12 5DA back in 24 March 2012 - Dark red body, thick white head. Nose is malts and caramel, taste is a little sweet, with a metallic hint. Rounded mouthfeel, dry finish. Best of the day, but still rather boring.

0.5l can from Centra, Colosseum shared with InBreak and ClubGonzo. Pours a clear nuttybrown body with a nice big lacing bubbly just off-white head. Aroma is strong caramel, some earth and tones of butter. Not to bad. It has a thin and watery mouthfeel with a average to soft carbonation level. Flavors are almost a bit off. Sour tones mixed with some metallic and papery caramel. This was not too good.

Looks good - dark, in fact opaque with a good creamy head. Quite a sweet malty nose. The taste is richer and sweeter than expected. The palaet is medium-bodied and reasonably balanced. Overall, this is very good for a mass-produced canned beer.

tap at the Claymore in Stirling - Pours amber with a lasting off white head. It smells of toasted caramel malt. The flavor is much the same and is pretty much all sweetness with minimal hops presence. Not bad.

Can 500ml.Clear medium amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, caramel - toffee, roasted notes, light hoppy. Flavor is moderate sweet and coffee / burnt roasted malt bitter with a average to long duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20090408]
