McEwan’s Export is perhaps the world’s best-travelled beer. First brewed to quench the thirst of those toiling under the hot Indian sun, it was labelled Export and the name stuck. The sun might not belt down quite the same in Scotland, but we know a refreshing beer when we taste one – Export is today the no.1 supermarket selling ale in in its homeland.
This beer began its life in the 1860s, when its casks would be loaded onto sailing ships for a 5,000-mile journey to India. There it was unloaded on a sun-drenched wharf and sent inland to reward the thirsty workers.
McEwan’s Export does the same noble job today, and is still known worldwide for its hearty character.

500ml can from Tesco in St Andrews. Deep brown in body appearance under a fragile, patchy head. Plain smell of sweet malts. Malty character with roasted grain and a bite of dark fruits. Lively carbonated [10.11.2008].

(can) Clear, amber colour with a thick beige foamy head. Sweet, slightly sugary malty nose with a tinge of caramel, lime and an almost ethereal spicy touch. Bitter flavour with a touch of sourness, light bodied with a light to medium carbonation. Unexciting minimal sugary malt profile with a tinge of caramel and very subtle fruity flavour; slim but nevertheless also a bit sticky and inharmonic finish with a moderate but not too aromatic bitter hoppy presence (27.X.08).

Big offwhite lasting head of unevenly sized bubbles. Deep brown body with fast carbonation. Earthy perfumy malt aroma with papery, peppery notes. Faint ripe fruit and cinnamon notes. Dry papery roasty malt taste with a wheaty dusty swetness. Sharpish dusty mouthfeel. Dry metallic roasty papery aftertaste. Somewhat unclean in the palate, and the sweetness cloys a bit. It’s decent, though. (0.5l can from Centra.)

Canned(500ml). -Clear amber coloured, medium to big pale beige head that went away slowly. Sweet malty and metallic taste with notes of caramel and just a tiny touch of burnt sugar iand hops n the finish. Boring.
