McEwan’s Export is perhaps the world’s best-travelled beer. First brewed to quench the thirst of those toiling under the hot Indian sun, it was labelled Export and the name stuck. The sun might not belt down quite the same in Scotland, but we know a refreshing beer when we taste one – Export is today the no.1 supermarket selling ale in in its homeland.
This beer began its life in the 1860s, when its casks would be loaded onto sailing ships for a 5,000-mile journey to India. There it was unloaded on a sun-drenched wharf and sent inland to reward the thirsty workers.
McEwan’s Export does the same noble job today, and is still known worldwide for its hearty character.

500ml Bottle: BBD 26 July 2013, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 7 June 2013. This is an old friend re-visited after a long absence. Looked good in the tankard: brown with a russet red hue, on top a full and lasting white foaming head. Semi-sweet malty molasses in the nose and taste with a crisp bitterness throughout. I remember it being richer and maltier back in the ’good old days’ but it still has a pleasant feel to it, if a little calmer in character. OK, but with reservations.

Bottle at the John=Jim Den Haag tasting, Den Haag. Poured a clear dark chestnut brown colour with a bubbly off white head. The aroma is big malt leading to a medium bitter, malty taste. The aftertaste isn’t good.

Can shared by Vaiz @ Jim is John tasting. Clear rusty orange color, small good lacing white head. Aroma is bad: malts and lots of butter. Taste malts and buttery. Slightly bitter but no, I really don’t like it.

Can shared from Vaiz. Pours clear amber with a small off white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, fruit and metal. Flavour is light moderate sweet and bitter. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

440ml can. Clear copper brown amber, frothy off-white head which diminishes leaving some lacing, and malty aroma. Taste is sweet caramel malt, with slight nutty & biscuit notes. Smooth body with a dry hop bitterness. OK.

0.5l can. Orange body, white head. Fruity hoppy aroma with some caramel, nuts and biscuits. Taste is similar to the aroma. Fruity hoppyness, caramel and nuts. A bit too light bodied, but still a nice session beer.

Bottle. Clear copper body with a medium off-white head. Lively carbonation. Very little lacing. Aroma of caramel, lightly roasted malt and metal. Caramel malt notes. There’s not much going on flavour-wise. Subtle roasted malt with a faintly sour finish. Thin body with a watery texture. Fizzy carbonation. Bland and watery. I could barely finish the bottle.
