This beer named after The Eldon Hole, one of the seven wonders of The Peak District, is a smooth, roasty stout brewed with Demerara sugar and with added complexity from the addition of Bourbon soaked oak. Caramel, coffee and chocolate flavours are married with a hint of vanilla and fine Kentucky Bourbon.

Bottle, 13C. Black with a cm of light tan head that fades. Aroma is earthy with bread, chicory, "choc", syrupy caramel. Sweetish with biscuit, caramel syrup, ordinary coffee, vague whisky. Dries out just a little and bitterness creeps up with some pepper and a little heat. It’s not unpleasant or blousy but there’s no stout that’s being prettied up and no fabulous spirit that’s a bit overbearing for the beer. The whole thing is a smudge on a smudge. Surprisingly ordinary.

Bottle from Callans, at mum and dads, 06/06/16. Black with a decent tan head. Nose is roast malt, treacle toffee, peppery spice, raisens, chocolate hobnob. Taste comprises dark chocolate, subtle bourbon, trace of coconut fudge, vanilla, red berry compote. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light booze tickle. Ok impy but no great ... doesn’t really pull out of first gear for me.

Almost black beer, a head is almost medium and beige. Aroma has chocolate coffee, some liquirice and roastiness, also notes of vanilla. Taste has coffee and roastiness, some vanilla. Only medium bodied, more strenght body would be better. Slightly disappointment, I expected more.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a light off white coloured head. The aroma is lightly roasted with done mellowness, and the flavour is quite bitter and roasted with a malty bourbon hint. Overall a reasonable imperial stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Thx!) Sampled draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival 2016. Dark brown, little tanned head. Nose is sweet chocolate milk powder, cacao, massively powdery, very grainy, drop of molasses, pinch of vanilla. Taste is massive sweet instant coffee, cacao powder, heavily powdery, mocha, low vanilla, low barrel, sweet chocolate milk powder, vanilla. I can see why some didn’t like this one, it is crazily powdery in structure & taste, bourbon is vague. I did like it, sweet mocha, cacao & instant coffee are nice, it is all that Bourbon BA RIS can be even if a nice beer, it is below average, od beer, not sure what went on here.

Draft @ Tilquin English Fest ’16, courtesy of and shared with the fine Belgian RB crew.

On keg. Appearance - dark brown to black with a slim but attractive head. Nose - dark chocolate, brown sugar and a hint of vanilla. Taste - sweet creamy chocolate with vanilla. Palate - full bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - a bit too sweet and booze filled.
