Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "VanderGhinste Roodbruin".
The main ingredients of our Vanderghinste Roodbruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer.
Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak barrels for 18 months, results in this specific West Flanders Red-brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Sample at the 2014 Infected Chimipalooza on 11/01/2014 (as "Vanderghinste Oud Bruin"). The beer pours a ruby-brown color with a medium foamy off-white head that recedes steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of tart fruit, wheat and malt. Light-bodied with flavors of mildly sour fruit, oak and herbal yeast. The finish is mildly sour with a fruity aftertaste. Decent overall.

Classic oud bruin since the 19th century, tasted both as Bellegems Bruin and as Vanderghinste Oud Bruin (its new name since 2012), made in the ’lambic’ barrels of this Western Flemish family brewery. Thin, pale beige, sticky, very stable head, colour a pretty warm bronze with ruby hue, clear. Aroma of fruity esters and tartness, passion fruit, sherry vinegar, yoghurt, elderberries, pear syrup, cloves, gooseberries, lemon zest, vanilla, some faint woodiness. Vivid estery fruitiness in the onset, red berries, lemony acidity in a gentle and elegant way, fresh lactic acidity too (sour cream), smooth caramelly malts in the background, dryingly tart finish, somewhat vinous, long with a brief and very subtle hoppiness, as typical for the style. A classic in its genre and the most interesting of the regularly and easily available Bockor beers.

Bottle. A- Slight funk, malty, wheat, slightly sour. A- Reddish brown color, clear liquid, tan head. T- Black cherry, woody, caramel, smoke, teriyaki sauce, black pepper. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- Quite good for my first sour brown/red. Lots of different flavors on the palate. The aroma was a little lacking but the taste made up for it.

Bottle. Aroma red fruits, straight-forward bretty sourness, cherry. Clear brown colour. Taste is sour, but softly, and balanced with some background malts. Fruity flavour. Rather short finish, easily drinkable. Very good.

Look: red-brown clear, beige frothy to creamy head.
Aroma: acid/acetic with quite a bit of sweet malts.
Taste: moderate sourness with and acetic edge, (over-)balanced by a hefty malt backbone. A tad of hop bitterness maybe.

Bottle from Willems as Vanderghinste Oud Bruin. Clear deep brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, wood, dark fruit and a little vinegar. Flavor is medium sweet and light acidic. Dry and light acidic finish. 050914
