One of the many sweet 'lambics' produced by Timmermans under John Martin, can from a random nightshop in Ghent, as it occurred to me that I apparently never had this particular one before. Contains all kinds of bad things: more sugar than wheat according to the ingredients list, concentrated strawberry but also elderberry aromas, additional aromas and antioxidant... Irregularly but tightly lacing, medium thick, mousy but quickly opening, pale off-pinkish head, hazed vermillion-tinged deep amber robe. Aroma of red candy - so strong that it overpowers the nostrils upon opening the can, 'poepegatjes' and Haribo, strawberry-flavoured bubblegum, Fanta Strawberry (yes, there is such a thing), pink ice cream, hints of dirt, swimming pool, iron and indeed some elderberry syrup, but hardly distinguishable from the strawberry aroma. Extremely sweet onset as expected, tons of white sugariness and strawberry and elderberry aromas in the most fake way imaginable, like strawberry-flavoured ice cream or red candy, light sourish undertone but more in an ascorbic acid-like way than anything even remotely lambic-like, spritzy lemonade-like carb; slick, bubblegummy body gaining more volume from sugar than from malts, though a light, rounded cereally effect lies buried deep beneath all that fruit candy. Ends with a very slight bitterish note but in a medicine-like way more than a hoppy way - actual hops are nowhere to be found, and meanwhile that overall red fruit candy and heavily sweet pink strawberry ice cream effect keeps dominating and annoyingly sticking to throat and teeth, with that ascorbic lemonade sourishness trailing behind. Delivers more or less what I was expecting, this has nothing at all to do with lambic in spite of the can abusing the word by adding Lambicus to the name; this kind of fake, industrial and unhealthily sugary products need to be extinguished from the face of the planet. I wonder why I even bothered... Oh John Martin, how I wish you would have stayed in England 110 years ago instead of setting up business in Antwerp!
