Bottle from Yodobashi Camera in Kyoto. It poured a dark inky black with a burnt orange-brown head of foam. The aroma was of a bitter roast malt which was matched in the flavor but also had smokey, caramel, toffee & chocolate notes. I love that they list the IBU, hops & OG on the label and was surprised that they use the exact same hops in the Orange Chocolate Stout: EK Goldings, Cascade, Willamette & Nugget. I agree with KyotoLefty, this beer is quite bitter & would probably benefit from some aging to mellow it out...

Not sure this deserves a separate listing on account of a slight rise in alcohol, but anyhow...Draught at Bungalow. Black, tan head. Didn’t look so special. Big roasty, creamy aroma, chocolate, some berries, roasted wood, some hops and coffee. Taste was similar with a very bitter finish from hops and roasted barley. Actually too bitter for me, as happens with their BW when very fresh. I would sit on this a while for better drinkability, but it was nice enough.

33 cl bottle vintage 2010, bottled 14.02.2010
Aroma has cocoa, some espresso coffee and hints of vegetables. Flavour is rather ashy with very dry, dark and bitter chocolate. The malt is too burned here and it lowers the drinkability of this.

On tap at GJBF, Osaka, 2008. A great, flavorful, rich stout. Strong, well roasted, rich and powerful but very well balanced. One of the best Japanese stouts I have had. Very rich and creamy.

Poured black with a nice tan head. Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and a little bit of alcohol in the aroma. Flavor was chocolate and roasted malts with some whiskey hidden underneath. Finish was about as bitter as I’ve ever had in an imperial stout. Body was rich and full. A very well made stout.

A lot of hype around this beer. Didn’t quit live up to all the hype, but still not complaining at all. Pitch black. Little head. Whisky, dark chocolate notes in the nose. Big bitter dark chocolate mouth. I meant really bitter. Some dark fruit and caramel notes as well. Full bodied. Big bitter finish with lots of dark chocolate. Excellent stuff.
