Hofbrouwerijke’s contribution to the saison hype, bottle from De Caigny. Very irregular, coarse, papery lacing, off-white head over a misty peachy orange blonde beer with ochre hue. Somewhat unusual, spiced aroma of a lot of soapy coriander, gooseberry, pickled gherkin, unripe green plum, moldy grapefruit, freshly grated ginger, apple peel, fried potato, hints of mustard seed, soggy white bread, raw leek, curry, hay, curcuma, grape peel, minerals. Fruity, somewhat ’messy’ onset actually, estery, with impressions of gooseberry, grapefruit, slight banana and unripe peach, minerally carbo seriously numbing the tongue even for a saison, supple bready and grainy malt middle while spiciness grows and grows, leading to a mass of coriander retronasally, soapy and strong enough to become tiring and obnoxious; earthy hop bitterness and yeasty breadiness round things off along with malt juiciness. Way ’overcoriandered’ - I was silently hoping Belgian beer culture is gradually evolving past this illness - and a bit messy, but otherwise drinkable; more a spiced Belgian blonde than anything else, however, and in that respect I fail to see the link with saison. That being said: there is no technical definition of something as ancient as the saison style and nowadays anything goes, it seems, as long as it’s spritzy, dry, ’Belgian’ fermented and more or less blonde, you can call it a saison... Not sure what the intention was here, I can drink it, even enjoy it to a certain extent, but there are too many technical flaws for it to shine the way it could.

Bottle @ home. A bit hazy golden color, medium sized white head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma is vegetal and some sour fruitpeel. Taste malts, fruitpeel, fruitpeel tart and lightly fruitpeel sourish with a fruitpeel bitter finish. Decent body and carbonation. Ok beer but not my thing at all.

33 cl bottle @ Sankt Hans Tasting, Ulfborg. Aroma has soapy tones, some apricot and citrus. Flavour has minerals, peaches, soapy citron and mild grassy tones. Quite typical tart-ish Belgian ale. A saison? Well, definitely a farmhouse one then.
