Another Coronado IPA - something I have fond memories of, so this can’t go wrong... Thick, lacing, frothy, egg-white, moussy head over a clear, deep and warm ’old gold’ colored beer. Refreshing and dank aroma of bergamot, lots of lime, candied lemon, rosewater, pink grapefruit flesh, tropical orchids, biscuit, overripe ’smoky’ papaja and even cigarette tobacco somewhere, green olive, sweet curry, gingerbread, toasted sweet onion, fresh green seaweed, soap, hints of lychee, yellow kiwi, banana passion fruit (which actually exists!), cashew nut, overripe mango, pink pepper. Lush but expectedly ’clean’ fruitiness in the onset, sourish and sweetish flavors well positioned against each other with impressions of passion fruit, yellow melon, apricot and papaja, softish carbo, very light salty edge but still overcome by the sweet and sour fruit character so not disturbing at all here, smooth and oily malt body, biscuity, slightly caramelly and carrying the fruit flavors onwards, ending in a beautifully aromatic hop finish: a retronasal feast of tropical flowers, sweet mediterranean onion, soft citrus and mango, gently but effectively bittering the back of the mouth and throat, resinous, peppery and grapefruit peel-like but nowhere harsh, lasting for a long time nevertheless and pairing very well with the ongoing biscuity malts and upcoming, warming, ’oude jenever’-like alcohol in the end. This is a very pretty, aromatic, elegant and gracious example of a DIPA, it beautifully showcases its combo of hop superstars in a well-crafted environment of juicy, biscuity malts and warming alcohol and in that sense completely delivers what one expects from the style. Another lovely beer from what I am becoming to regard as an American IPA specialist brewery.
