Bottle. Amber color. Malt and toffee in the aroma and flavor. Grassy hops. Hint of roast. Caramel. A soft nuttiness. Alcohol. Decent overall.

Fles 33cl thuis. Flink zoet, toffee, caramel, wat rood en geel fruit, butterscotch, suikers, hopbitters, boozy, licht kleffig. Niet helemaal in balans. (22-2-2019).

33cl bottle. A clear deep amber beer with a mid-sized most good lasting beige head. Aroma of strong red malt, raisins, pine, alcohol. Taste of strong resinous bitter hops, pine, red malt, raisins, boozy.

Unusually strong ‘pale ale’ by this young brewing project in Groede near Cadzand at the ‘Zeeuwse’ coastline; at Brasserie Oud Hulst in Hulst, a picturesque little town located at the other side of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Bottle – as with their other beers – covered in a plastic layer depicting in this case a photo that is perhaps a bit reminiscent of India’s colonial past, as SterV pointed out… Very thick and frothy, creamy, dense, egg-white, thickly lacing head, hazy reddish-coppery deep amber robe, cloudy with small yellowish protein flakes after adding the sediment. Aroma of old dried bread crust, brown honey, very outspoken dried orange peel, rusk, brandy, dried parsley, soggy peanuts, marmalade, dried apple, carrot cake, jute, baker’s yeast in the end. Sweetish onset, notes of dried apricot, baked banana slices and a touch of melon, sourish undertone strongly accentuated by a sharp, bit numbing carbonation effect, full and rounded, slightly oily mouthfeel, fluffy. Deeply peanutty and caramelly malt body makes up the main core of this beer, some honeyish residual sweetness on top and ending with a firm hop bitter treatment, yet in a leafy, rooty way rather than the bright, modern IPA and APA New World fruitiness I was expecting, even if the dried orange peel effect returns very clearly and adds some colour and complexity. A lot of bready yeastiness and some yeasty phenols in the end, along with lingering malt sweetness dried by very pronounced, eventually a bit astringent, gin-like alcohol. I get the low scores here: if you call something an ‘imperial pale ale’, your consumers will expect a DIPA of sorts, even if the moniker ‘India’ has been cleverly left out of the name; this, however, is much more a strong Belgian ale, a tripel or Belgian style barleywine of sorts, with a modern, citrus peel twist to it. If you look at this beer that way, it becomes all the more enjoyable – but as a Belgian, maybe I’m too used to phenolic and bready yeast effects, who knows…
