Master brewer Gerard van den Broek made his ideal wheat beer: Hertog Jan Weizener. This willful wheat beer combines the best of a German weizen and Belgian witbier. The hop, malted wheat, fresh yeast, coriander and orange peel give it a full, fresh flavor and a deep gold color with a slight haze. The secondary fermentation on the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

330 mml bottle tasted on 14/06/2014. Cloudy yellow appearance with thick white head. Fruity and wheat aroma but not intense. The taste is not well balanced between the fruits and the cereals. Light body and light carbonation. Not a good Weizen. Next one please.

Aroma: Wheat, yeast, citric and banana.
Palate: Medium + body. Tad sweet and an ok bitterness. Average to rich carbonation.
Taste: Mild balanced wheat, mild citric, yeast and balanced banana.
Overall impression: Nice refreshing mix between a wit and a hefe weisse.

Bottle split at Craft tasting from Dutch supermarket. Hazed yellow straw colour. Persistent white head. Aroma is wheat bread, belgian phenols with a touch of plastic. Flavour is wheat bread malt. Flat carb / flabby palte.

[10/10/13] Draught at Beer Temple in Amsterdam. Hazy yellow. Wheaty aroma of yeast, bread, banana and a bit of clove. Sweetish fruity flavor, yeasty and a bit spicy. Medium-bodied. Pretty refreshing.

Bottle thanks to Fergus. It pours hazy pale gold with a thick white head. The nose is toasty, dough, grass and light spice. The taste is earthy, hay, toast, grass, sugar and straw with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Not a whole lot going on, but it’s alright.

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell - London. Big thanks to Fergus for this one. Pours clearish yellow with a tight, white cream head. Doughy wheat bread aroma. Light to medium sweet flavor with sugary wheat bread, faint straw. Light bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Simple, bready wheat finish. Not offensive, pretty easy.

Cloudy deep golden-yellow color, starts with a good white head, settles down to about an inch. Aroma is sweet, a lot of banana, hints of caramel, doughty yeast. Fruity taste, wheat, slightly sour, hints of citrus. Light-bodied, somewhat creamy texture, citrus is stronger in the aftertaste, crisp, semi-sweet finish with slight bitterness, more a weizen than a white beer. So the name Weizener is quite appropiate.

Tap at The Fiddler, Den Haag. Poured a hazy light amber with a thin white head. The aroma is weak yeasty with a little banana. The flavour is very weak sour sour with a little banana, malt and not much else on the very watery palate. You can do better Hertog Jan!
