Master brewer Gerard van den Broek made his ideal wheat beer: Hertog Jan Weizener. This willful wheat beer combines the best of a German weizen and Belgian witbier. The hop, malted wheat, fresh yeast, coriander and orange peel give it a full, fresh flavor and a deep gold color with a slight haze. The secondary fermentation on the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

Bottle at home. Cloudy, yellow pale liquid with big white head. Aroma is yeasty with notes of banana, wheat and some sweetness. Taste is also yeasty with medium sweetness, wheat and light bitterness. Too sweet for this type of beer for my liking. Light bodied with good carbonation. It’s ok, but something that I will buy again if I find it.

It’s not bad, certainly for a weizen (although the style is Belgian White here I see) but nothing really special about it either. Taste, rate, forget.

Probably my highest scoring weizener. Great smell, scoring 9 points which is really high. Taste dissapoints a bit though.

9/10/12/11/11/11

Cloudy orange with a lasting white head. Aroma of banana, coriander and clove. Sweet and fruity flavour dominated by the banana. Pretty classic weiss with a Belgian touch

Thanks to bierkoning for this one! Bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Zippy, modest turbid, nice head. Starts mild, modest fruity-yeasty with notes of apricot, not too dry. Finish still mild, modest sourish. Could be more intense, only average!

(Draught at Café Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 1 Aug 2010) Cloudy golden colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, wheaty nose with notes of citrus, grass and apricots. Fruity, slightly wheaty taste with lemon, grass, bread and a fresh citric finish with low bitterness. Medium body, fairly sweet. Decent witbier, solid but possibly lacking something extra.
