A golden lager with a thin white head. In aroma, light mineral malt with light German hops, faint and watery. In mouth, light chalky malt adjunct, very faint. Bottle at Geylang restaurant, Hue.

Can at THT May. Clear golden with white head. Light cardboard, moldy caramel, very metallic and chalky. So far so bad but the nasty chemical bitter finish is really nasty. Light bodied.

Can at a Hanoi convenience store. Poured a clear straw colour with a thin broken white head and lots of bubbles. The aroma is grain, light hop. The flavour is light bitter with a light, watery, cardboard malt, light hop bitter palate. Light bodied with lively carbonation. If there was a chilled palate of these waiting at an oasis in the Sahara for a bunch of guys who had not drunk in days, they would go down a treat. Otherwise.... you wouldn’t order a second!

Tropical lager from central Vietnam, brewed in Hue City by a Carlsberg-owned brewery. Pours a very pale yellow blonde with greenish hue, clear with calm sparkling and a kind of ’dust’ of lager yeast suspended in it; thin but stable, cream white head leaving fine lacing. Weak aroma of cereals, cooked rice, iron, very faint herbal hops and a weird and off-putting odour of not just sweat as usual in this style of lager, but rotting vegetables, silt and - most strikingly, and I’m not kidding - urine (ammonia). Neutral and watery onset, sourish carbo, light graininess, clear presence of rice but everything in a watery context, something very faintly salty, weird sourish accent in the finish, minerals, retronasal ammonia effect again but fortunately very weakly so, finish thin and watery and more rice-like than hoppy - in fact, even for an Asian lager, you need a microscope to detect any hop bitterness at all. Low quality lager, that much is clear, and though Carlsberg itself will never be "the best beer in the world" to me, the "Danish technology" boasted on the label seems very far away. One of the worst tropical lagers I ever had, but an interesting tasting session nonetheless, so many thanks to Sanne and Judith for bringing me this bottle all the way from Vietnam!
