Typical Flemish red-brown beer with a pleasant balance between complex fruitiness and refreshing acidity. This gem of brewing art owes its recognition as an "acknowledged local product" to the age-old production process.
Beer from high mixed fermentation, carefully matured for 24 months on oak wood. Basic ingredients: barley malt, caramel malt, annual Poperinge hops and pure water. The spontaneous but extremely complex microbiology inside the oak barrels results in an extremely soft, sour beer, ready to be fortified with a young, high-fermented beer.

Mørk brun farge med lyst beige skum som blir liggende. Lukter sure bær, trevirke, fruktig. Noe oljete, medium fylde. Smaker syrlig og samtidig lettdrikkelig. Kort syelig avslutning.

On tap at Popeye’s. Ichtegem grand cru 5.5% A deep plum red-brown with a pungent red-wine like cork fruity nose. Like sangria. The taste is fruity plum and sugared malts sweet but tart. Very nice.

Draught at OEC SourFest, 8/15/15.
Clear maroon-auburn with a moderate amount of off-white head showing moderate to low retention.
Straightforward acetic acid in the nose is also joined by very light caramel sweetness and a touch of vanilla. Lots of fruitiness emerges with warming, as well as some oily/leathery oakiness. Sweetness begins to get problematic, though. No alcohol noted.
The flavor has an initial lactic and acetic mix that is enjoyable, but quickly succumbs to a cheap, adjunct-like waxy flavor from some sugar addition, possibly? It’s very pervasive and is joined by too much simple sweetness, vanilla and monotonous vinegar. Watery/loose texture with too much thinning. Not good at all, as per usual from Strubbe. Kinda surprised at the ratings for this one....

Caoba, dos dedos de espuma ligeramente tintada. Aroma a mi no tinto, ligeramente agrio. Notas de caramelo. en boca, carbonatación notable y cuerpo flojo. El sabor mantiene lo que anticipaba en el aroma con una base malteada dulce y un tono agrio general, tolerable. Para amantes del estilo, que no es mi caso. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
