Typical Flemish red-brown beer with a pleasant balance between complex fruitiness and refreshing acidity. This gem of brewing art owes its recognition as an "acknowledged local product" to the age-old production process. Beer from high mixed fermentation, carefully matured for 24 months on oak wood. Basic ingredients: barley malt, caramel malt, annual Poperinge hops and pure water. The spontaneous but extremely complex microbiology inside the oak barrels results in an extremely soft, sour beer, ready to be fortified with a young, high-fermented beer.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. This my kind of sour, not overly puckering, perhaps tempered by the barrel aging. Some mellow wooden notes are added as a result. A murky ruby brown pour, soft tightly beaded head, acetic plum aroma. Taste is initially tart, mellowing quickly to a dry, sweet finish. Excellent all around.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Poured into a chalice. Pours a clear dark ruby with a modest tan head that lingers before dissipating. Big aromas of cherry, apple and yeast with a bit of barnyard funk. Taste is very sour cherry forward with some apple and currant on the finish. The beer itself is not really sour per sea but it does have a light tartness that cuts into the overall sweet palate. It is reminiscent of a less sour version of Duchesse de Bourgogne. Full body with nice carbonation and a slightly sticky cola-like mouthfeel. Nice lingering finish that coats the palate. This is were the tartness stands out...especially as it warms up. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ichtegem's Grand Cru on 26 May 2015 at 18:55 - Score: 7

Pours a slight plum / blood red, no head at all very hazy. Nose is akin to cherry pie w/ old meat. Nice mouthfeel and carbonation front is on point. Tartness is reserved and fully of flavor but unfortunately the flavor isn’t very exciting. lots of off flavors.

11.2oz bottle pours out a reddish copper topped with a sand head. Nose is lots of wood cherries and a little funk. Taste is as the nose with lots of the wood showing some sweetness and a nice little cherry tartness.
