Typical Flemish red-brown beer with a pleasant balance between complex fruitiness and refreshing acidity. This gem of brewing art owes its recognition as an "acknowledged local product" to the age-old production process. Beer from high mixed fermentation, carefully matured for 24 months on oak wood. Basic ingredients: barley malt, caramel malt, annual Poperinge hops and pure water. The spontaneous but extremely complex microbiology inside the oak barrels results in an extremely soft, sour beer, ready to be fortified with a young, high-fermented beer.

The more ’authentic’, i.e. wood-aged version of Ichtegem’s Oud Bruin, sweetish with tart accents of sour cream, sour cherries and red berries, vinous, deep red brown colour, light lactic acidity in the finish with woody notes. Not as complex as e.g. Rodenbach Grand Cru or Duchesse de Bourgogne, but an honest, well-made, artisanal oud bruin and therefore important per definition.

Bottle at Six Degrees North, Aberdeen, 21/06/14. Dark chestnut brown/amber with reddish hues. Nose is tarte fruit, dark cherry skins, musty fruit cake mix, dates, sour mash, dank straw, light smoke and spice. Taste comprises stoned fruit pangs, caramel, light toffee, bitter cherry, almond, light acidic notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, sour rinse in the close. Decent enough Flemish red.

Smell is sweet, with a sour touch . some oak , not much signs of age , actually . Taste is sweet and sour, rather thin , fruits , refreshing . Bit dry, and oaky at the end . Aftertaste has some candy-like fruityness, but not over the top . Some vanilla-like touches . Very nice .

Reddish brown. Sour cherries and chocolate sauce. Complex, while still being well-balanced.

Shared bottle at local tasting. Very dark red colour, off-white head. Nice and "typical Flemish red" aroma, notes of red wine vinegar and oak. Fairly smooth flavour, notes of red wine vinegar again (but not nearly as sour, of course), hints of sour fruits and oak.

Refrigerated 75 cl green bottle that says Strubbe’s Grand Cru Flemish Ale (beer of the month club) corked and capped poured into a tulip (the cork did not come out of the bottle the glass broke). Pours translucent dark brown with crimson highlights and small off-white head. Aroma is light tart, medium/light body, low carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is light tartness, vineous, some cherries, some sweetness. Easy to drink and pretty good.

Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Red wine and barrel notes, sour funk and a bit of berry. Cloudy maroon with a rich beige head. Front end sourness that masks lots of flavor, cherries and a bit of oak come up after finishing sweet and sour. Flavors are a bit muddy, I have seen much better versions of a Flemish.
