Pernicious is our flagship India Pale Ale boasting a silver medal at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. This massively dry-hopped ale has minimum malt complexity and a combination of juicy, tropical fruit-forward hops with heavy resinous American hops. Pernicious is the epitome of a West Coast IPA, made right here in the Southeast.

Draught at The Ave, 1/14/17.
Blonde-golden body is clear and topped by a small, white head showing average retention.
Kumquat, nectarine, grapefruit, lemon and lime in the nose show a good mix of juicy fruits, light tropical notes and West Coast citrus. Malts in the background express graham cracker, honey and very light caramel, but are not overbearing. A pinch of pine and light resin, but fairly balanced. Clean, no alcohol noted.
In the mouth it’s somewhat maltier than I’d prefer. Very light caramel, lots of honey and white bread with kumquat, grapefruit and light pine. Surprisingly low on the bitterness and overall easygoing and light for its size. Not all that flavorful, though it’s balanced and clean. Very straightforward, prototypical IPA.

On tap at Bulldog near the Charlotte airport. It pours a clear pale golden color with a white head. The aroma is fresh and tropical with passionfruit and grilled peaches. Light malt. The flavor is the same. Tasty notes of sweet grilled peaches with pineapple, passionfruit and hints of piney bitterness. Dextrinous mouth feel, but not caramel heavy or sweet. Solid floral/piney bitterness. A really good IPA.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/27/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden yellow color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, berry, mint, pepper, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dank citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt notes with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, berry, mint, pepper, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, lemon/orange peel, pepper, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dank citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and creamy/grainy balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is an outstanding IPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dank citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Slightly hazy gold body that holds up a tall, dense white head. The abundant aroma is citrus and tropical fruits. The flavor is bitter with pineapple and mango notes along with all the citrus from the aroma. Very good but I won’t drink many more at $3+ /bottle.
