Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

Aroma: Aroma is heavy malty and rather sweet, with caramel, toffee, and some dark fruits
Appearance: This beer pours a dark brownish-red color with a nice tan head
Flavor: The taste is heavy sweet and heavy malty without really any noticeable bitterness
Palate: The feel of this one is heavy and a touch sticky, it drinks rather smoothly, and has a lengthy finish
Overall Impression: Overall, this is a solid scotch, though I just found it to be a touch too sweet for my personal preference. I just wanted something to balance it out and there really wasn't anything there to do that. That critique is fairly small though, and I enjoyed this one overall.

On tap at Rattle N Hum, July 2012. Dark amber with a small head. This beer was dominated by malt both in the aroma and taste. Also some nuts and light notes of candy.

Tap. Pours clear dark reddish brown, small tan head, min lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, caramel, butterscotch, and a bit of smokiness. Flavor is medium sweet and smoky with roasted malt and a warming alcohol finish.

This Scotch Ale poured a deep red colour with a nice, creamy, tan coloured head. To the nose there are scents of chocolate, coffee, ripe fruit and caramel. First taste was smooth and bursting with flavour. Flavours of coffee, cocoa, molassass and a small hopp flavour. Finish is roasty with coffee flavours lingering.

12 oz bottle purchased at MDL in Overland Park, Kansas as a single. Bottled on July 12, 2011 stamped on the label. Pour is a dark brown copper with a smallish off white head that falls quick. The aroma is mild ash peat, along with a fruit apple sweetness and general caramel maltiness. The taste is the peat up front, turning quick to the rounded malt, lighter on the caramel, finishes grassy and a bit more peat. The palate is medium bodied, low carbonation, oily mouth feel which coats the mouth a bit then dries out with some mild alcohol notes.

Thanks to gn0sis for that one. Bottle looks good. Beer in the glass deep black, nice head. Starts wonderful malty-smokey, fine woody-spicy notes. Fruity background. Also some hints of liquorice. Well balanced finish. Great beer!

12 ounce bottle from State Line Liquors, bottled 11/18/10 and opened 3/27/11. Pours a clear ruby color with a medium sized fizzy tan head. Fairly poor head retention and decent lacing. Aroma of toffee, nutty notes and fairly strong peat. The taste is toffee, sesame, nutty notes and a sweet caramel finish. Medium bodied. A little disjointed, but pretty good.

Pours alarmingly dark, nearing English Porter territory, deep brown and opaque. The head is lifeless and drab, though, flitting about and leaving with great haste. Smells sweet and toffee-like but watery as well, like the flavors are being held just out of proper sniffing distance. I want this beer to taste better, since it has such great potential, but, while the flavors are good, they are also brief. Starts thick and juicy, full of Werther’s-like joy, then gains a smoky middle before the hops clear the streets for a dull finish. Feels okay, too bubbly for such thick malt longings. (5/29/09/)
