Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

Draft at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, dark fruits, caramel. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Bottle, 13C. Dark red brown with a pale beige head. Very earthy aroma with bread, toffee and a whiff of smoke. Nice but doesn’t really signal what’s to follow. Medium bodied, a bit much carbonation for me. Sweet with toffee and bread, raisins, chestnuts. Dries out very quickly, really before the richness has time to get going on the palate. Bitterness is discreet. Never quite grabbed me despite lots of pleasant things going on - suspect it’s the lack of rumbling malty bottom end that would be acceptable at 5.5% but not so much at 7.7.

Medium beige head. Black body goes dark brown at edges. Deep earthy aroma with fruity coffee notes. Sweet, and slightly dry, earthy roasty taste with toasted bread and fruit notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, hollow, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish mealy roasty dried fruit aftertaste with toffee, candy, and coffee grounds notes. Weird. Not bad, but very earthy and odd. Improves when it warms. (0.284l keg at Brewdog Manchester.)

Keg at Brewdog Camden, London. A dark brown coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Malty, caramel, dark fruit aroma. Tastes similar, malty, caramel, dark fruit, slightly sweet.

A dark brown ale with a thick collapsing lacing brown head. In aroma, sweet dark cherries with light chocolate, light vanilla, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet peaty chocomalt with light grassy hops, molasses, light licorice, lingering peatyness, very nice.

From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a cola brown with an off white head. Faintly smoky aroma. Flavors of caramel and toasted malts. Not much hop flavors. Medium mouthfeel with lively carbonation.

12 ounce bottle. Dark brown color with reddish hints. Small bubbly beige head. Roasted malt aroma with hints of burnt caramel and smoked almonds. Wonderful roasted malt flavor with subtle hints of smoked peat, dried fruit and toasted hazelnuts. Smooth and flavorful with nice balance and complexity. Finishes sweet and smokey with subtle hops.
