The first edition in our Lineage series of farmhouse ales features local wheat from Valley Malt in Hadley, Massachusetts. Bright, clear, and straw-yellow in appearance, Lineage Wheat invites with a complex nose of grassy funk, crisp citrus rind, pepper, and floral white wine. Starting mildy tart, yet not sour, this approachable saison follows through with flavors of earth, musky funk, woody-oak, light wheat, and some balancing, tangy, citrus character. Lineage Wheat is beautifully light in body and dry on the palate.

truly awesome sour beer aroma, very well balanced, notes of wood, leather, sour beer, at level with the best belgians reg. aroma. flavor is a bit less interesting, sour beer alright, but quite some sweet malts in there, as well as a lot of woody notes - problem is - the woody notes sort of doesn't work well with so much sweetness. Almost tastes like a sweetened sour belgian. They say wild saison so it could be defended that the beer tastes a bit sweet grassy, sweet herbal and saison'ish rather than more crazy sour american sour'ish. The bottle behaved perfectly, no gushing or anything, so good craftmanship in that regard. Stamped 04/13/18 probably MDY so april 13th 2018. tasted mar.31.2024 The beer has kept well in the 6 years it's been in the bottle, no bad signs of aging at all.

Draft in Canton. Cloudy golden straw appearance. Aroma shows me Peach, oak, yeast. Flavor has a wheaty base with the oak never getting astringent or the vinegar that I hate in sour ales. Some subtle citrus rinds and mild funk. The mouthfeel is nice without an overly sour or tart finish. Honestly, for a American sour ale this is really nice.

Draught at Canton, 4/29/17.
Very nice clarity to this brassy-golden body with slight copper hues and an off-white head atop that fades steadily to a ring.
The nose is soft and wonderfully aged. I think this thing is going on three years and it seems like it’s matured nicely in cold storage in a keg. Nothing punchy/aggressive nor is there any dominant character here. A good mix of acetic acid tempered nicely by cereal-like malt sweetness in the background as well as soft lactic acids and gentle, fruity Brett notes (lime, kumquat, melon). The oak is notable, providing light toast, but seems well-enough integrated in to the nose at this point as to not dominate. Very sniffable and doesn’t seem old or tired, just relaxed and homogeneous.
Drinking it provides probably an even better experience as soft wheat and barrel tannins take any edge the bacterial acidity might provide. Gentle lactic notes provide mild tartness while fruity Brett adds cherry, light lime, ripe nectarine and melon. Soft oak, vanilla and rich, but well-attenuated honey lingers on the finish and the low but engaging carbonation provides just enough satisfying zing to keep it crisp enough on the finish. Deep and complex with tons of tropical fruit, wood, multi-layered malt/wheat and a supremely soft texture. This is aged beer at its absolute best and impressively shows how well they are keeping an eye on the beers they’re aging.
