Draft, 2010. Murky brown color, tan edge head. Aroma of cocoa, vanilla, butterscotch. Taste is smooth toffee, vanilla, caramel. Hops are long gone, but this is delicious. 2013 had more hops, pine mostly. A totally different beer.

Total Wine, Fairfax 4-pack: Pours a brownish amber with a beige head. Aroma is oak barrel, some vanilla, hops, and a healthy helping of maltiness. Taste is not particularly bitter, as the hops are somewhat attenuated. he malts are more prominent and the hops play second whistle. The oaking is clear and evident and adds some complexity. Minor bitterness. This is somewhat sweet, but not excessively so.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of pine hops with a hint of grapefruit with a bit of backing sweet grain and oakiness. Flavor has much more sweet grain with a hint of vanilla and oakiness with a good amount of bitter pine in the finish.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree, 12/1/12
Aroma: The nose has definite a wood presence, some earth, a little pine, fruit, and just a little vanilla
Appearance: It pours a murky dark reddish-brown color with a small beige head and spotty lacework
Flavor: The hops come out more in the flavor. It tastes a little sweet, and has a nice, but not super bitter hop presence. There's some wood there too, but not as much as the nose suggested.
Palate: The body is medium, it feels a touch sticky, with a soft carbonation, and a dry, woody finish
Overall Impression: The wood treatment worked nicely here. I have to say, it has been awhile since I have had a Big Hoppy Monster, so I didn't really have a great comparison in my head for the non-oaked version, but I enjoyed this version.
