IPA Brewed with Rye

Serious hop bitterness, along with an unyielding grapefruit bouquet from the Amarillo dry hop, balances the malty richness of four varieties of imported Belgian caramel malts. Pours a spectacular crimson with a creamy tan head. A generous addition of rye malt accentuates a spicy, crisp finish.

Poured from 355mL bottle. Clear medium amber brown with off-white head. Very bready malt with some caramel and little hoppy kick, but not overbearing at the end, resiny finish. Medium body.

Reviewed from notes.
It pours a red/amber brown body that leaves a half finger of white head and lasts for only twenty seconds. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising and some light spotty lacing is left around the sides of the pint glass.
The smell has a nice combination between the malts and the rye. I do notice some light hops as well. I had a tough time in the beginning, but after a good minute of warming up, the smell became apparent (I wonder if I had it too cold?).
The taste has rye and hops giving a nice bite and the malts were a bit more subdued. I do notice some really light citrus in the taste as well.
The palate sits about a medium on the body, and showcases a slight sessionability to it. Is it the rye or the carbonation giving an over-abundance of harshness?
Overall, I like everything about this beer but would only suggest a bit of tweaking on the palate. I would still get this again.

Another solid beer from Founders, but the question I have is purely for rating reasons why this is labeled as an IPA and not grains? Anyways, nice one but its either the high sweetness of the malts or the rye that I find to be a bit annoying after awhile. Looking forward to finishing this one before its done.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, bottled on 8/19/2013. Pours lightly cloudy reddish orange color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange zest, orange rind, caramel, floral, pine, spicy rye, and floral earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus hops with moderate caramel/rye malts; and great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange zest, orange rind, caramel, floral, pine, spicy rye, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, pineapple, citrus zest, caramel, floral, pine, rye, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of citrus hop and moderate rye/caramel malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy, smooth, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic rye pale ale! All around awesome complexity and balance of citrus/pineapple hops and moderate caramel/rye malts; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

355 ml bottle courtesy of secret summer santa. Thank you jsquire! Pours tiny hazy brownish amber with a small offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is malty, slightly fruity and tiny herbal with rye bread, grapefruit juice, lemon zest, orange zest, mango, peaches, freshly cut grass, pine cones and hints of alcohol. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, malty and tiny herbal with rye bread, grapefruit juice, grapefruit rinds, resinous wood, pine cones, unripe mango, freshly cut grass, lemon zest and hints of black pepper. Mouthfeel is slightly astringent, slightly oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is bitter with rye bread, grapefruit rinds, resinous wood, pine cones, black currant tea and lemon zest. A bit rough around the edges but still good. Bottle date was about 6 months ago so that might be a factor.
