Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

*Old rating, best before 04.12. Süßlich-mildes Bier. Leicht floral, süßlicher Körper, mild-weich, nicht zu tief, leicht herb mit typisch belgischer Hefe, weich-süßlich, leicht fruchtig.

Draft @ Grill Next Door. Very floral with some light citrus hints. The dry hopping seems to carry over into the flavor as well, with Belgian yeast, cracker malt, and solid amount of floral notes. Nicely dry texture. Classic example of a Belgian ale and highly drinkable.

Bottle @ Les halles, Ieper. Pours hazy amber with airy but rather stable white head. Clear aroma of fruit, flowers and malt, with touches of hops. Sweetish flavour of malt and fruit, complemented by bitter, hoppy notes. Rough, estery finish. Good.

Classic Flemish ale since 1981, celebrating the hop culture in and around Poperinge. Yellowish white, irregular, stable, sticky head, colour a misty peach blond. Very aromatic hoppy smell, clear dry-hopping, pepper, orange peel, grapefruit, green apple, cumin, honey; fresh and sharpish ’citrusness’ in the onset, soft sweetish malts, dry-hopping apparent from the middle onwards with a strong, green, perfumey, peppery hop bitterness in the finish, where some fruitiness also lingers as well as warming, gin-like alcohol. Nice and elegant beer, justly a classic.
