Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

From tap at cardinal. Cloudy golden. Meringueish off-white head and lacing. Fruity, floral and slightly sour aroma with lime, tropical fruits and chocolate. Similar and very refreshing taste with newly mowed grass and herbs. Lime, grape fruit, moderate bitterness and a hint of chocolate in aftertaste.

Draft pour. Quick disappearing white head. Pours a dark orange color with a fruit aroma. Mostly grapefruit with a little funk. Flavor is mostly fruit. Citrus with a little banana in there. Some orange as well. All flavor is dry and empty to me. A little foul honestly. Something missing on this one. Dry finish. Not the worst out there, but probably won’t go back to this one.

330 ml bottle. Pours amber with a light head. Aromas of sweet malts, ginger, and light citrus with some floral notes. Flavors are similar though a bit more pronounced and with the addition of dried bananas/yeast. Pleasant.

Keg at Six Deg North. It pours clear gold with a minimal head. The nose is fresh, dough, grass, floral, light sweetness and farmhouse bread. The taste is crisp, bitter, doughy, grass, hay, spice, mild sweetness and earth with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate cabonation. Hides abv well. Pretty nice.

330mL bottle, pours a clear golden with a large white head. Aroma brings out lots of Belgian yeast, dry apples and some floral notes. Flavour is very dry, with lots of Belgian yeast, crackery malt, and light floral notes. Very dry, yeasty and fairly lively carbonated. Classic Belgian ale.
