Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

Drought. Golden yellow with creamy white head, slight honey aroma, low carbonation, honey taste with a sour tang and bitter long finish. The bitter aftertaste and the metalling tang is not very nice.

Goldenes Bier mit ordentlicher Schaumkrone. Geruch leicht hefig, fruchtig, würzig, blumig, genauso ist auch der Geschmack.

Surprised to find I’d never written about this before. 25cl Bottle: BBD 05/2015, poured @ home into my huge Judas glass on 5th 12 2013 during a Belgian tasting evening I had with myself! Slight haze to the golden body, large white head. it’s hoppy in aroma and taste, but it’s all subtle stuff compared to the ’new wave’ of Belgian hoppy brews. This is an old friend who isn’t going to let you down or upset you. A true Belgian classic with very few beers like it anywhere in the world. High in alcohol for it’s body depth maybe, but it still manages to hide the fact it sits at 7.5% ABV.

Cloudy golden colour, good white frothy head, stays quite awhile, thin layer remains. Fresh hop aroma, light basement, bit roasty, floral, grass, herbs, dough. Full bittersweet taste, roasted malt undertones, bit sharp. Medium body, creamy texture, long medium bitter finish. Special tasty and well-balanced beer.

Sample at 101 Beer Kitchen. The beer pours a cloudy pale amber color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily to a wispy film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Floral aroma with some fruit and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of herbal yeast, ripe fruit and mild grassy hops. The finish is fruity with a yeast aftertaste. Decent overall.

Tap at bxl east. Pours amber gold with big fluffy white head. Nose is light barnyard and hops. Tastes yeasty, musky, wheat, lots pepper, some other spicing, light hops, and tropical fruit. Different and drying on finish. Ok

75cl bottle, shared numerous times with family here in Flanders France. Brilliant medium-bodied aromatic hoppy beer full of lively Belgian yeast, some vanilla and a refreshing hoppy citrus linger. One of my favourite beers, not just for it's profile but for the memories and conviviality it brings.

Deep Muddy Amber Color, Some Floaters, Small Head Some Lacing. Faint Belgian Yeast Aroma. Sweet malt, fruity, light yeast. Medium body, Mild Yeast means rather smooth brew and easy drinking. Light hop bitter ,reaffirming Hoppy in Europe and in America mean two different things. Not as bold as other Belgians. Rather Nice.
