Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

Delicious beer, one of my first lovers in beer-fanatic-land. Aromatic and yeasty like a typical Belgian, but with a soft touch of hops.

Hazy golden colour with a medium creamy head, white colour and good duration. Aroma is Belgian yeasty with liht citrus notes. Flavor is mild bittery and yeasty, notes of tangerine and orange. Smooth final with a decent bitterness, dry sensation.

25cl bottle at home. Pours a hazy light amber with short, short-lived head. Arome is like a tripel - yeasty and honeyish, with hay and herbal hops. Well-balanced taste between sweet and bitter. Medium-full body, thick texture, good length finish. Pretty good.

Tap at the Boudewijn, Rotterdam. Poured a slightly hazy amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is yeasty and dry, but somewhat weak. The flavour is clean, crisp, medium bitter, with some nettles and grassy hops and some weak dry spice on the palate. Not your typical Belgian ale, but that’s not a bad thing!

Pours deep, bubbly, amber-gold with a minimal head. Banana, apricot, flowers, yeast aroma. Sweet, musty fruit flavour....a little honey. Very delicate and mild, just a slight bit of tart/bitter. Very good.

Bottle has a Best By: 02/14 date but I am unsure how old the bottle is. The label seems clean and new but the lip of the bottle looks a bit moldy. Aroma is a balanced blend of hops and yeast characteristics. The hops have a nice floral and earthy aroma. The yeast has a subtle phenolic note with some nice tropical fruit and pear eaters. The aroma is also slightly yeasty with a bit of pale malt aroma. Pours a cloudy pale golden color with a thick, pillowy white head that has great retention but steadily recedes. All legs with moderate lacing. The flavor is fairly sweet with a light cracker malt note. There is a good amount of sweet fruitiness with a lot of pear, cider and tropical fruit. There is a light phenolic note in the finish providing a hint of light pepper. The bitterness is moderately low but does provide a nice palate cleansing finish when it mixes with the phenolics. The hop flavor is fairly floral and a bit spicy. I dot think I have ever had Popperings hops before and they are quite unique. Finishes only slightly dry with some residual sweetness in the finish without being sticky. The mouthfeel is medium to medium light bodied with medium high carbonation. The astringency is very low, almost imperceptible and the alcohol warmth is low. Overall a very nice example of a Belgian IPA that really shows the hop character while staying true to the Belgian Style. I wouldn't mind seeing this hop in a cleaner style IPA though so I can really see the hop profile. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

250ml bottle - Hazy golden body, thin white head. Aroma of yeast, vanilla malt and spice. The taste is fairly well balanced leaning towards the hops mainly, a bit of lemon, dry light spice, alcohol is only just noticeable, smooth and medium body.Quite decent.
