375ml bottle. Pours black. Earth, caramel, intense chocolate, smoke, figs, vanilla, big oak, big brown sugar, cinnamon, port vinous character, nice bitter finish. Big boozy complexity. Hot, but tasty as anything.

Pours dark brown, beige head. Head is not too large and is gone fast. Aroma has some alcohol but also freshness. Dry bitter chocolate. Sweet fruits. Taste is quite intense, feels carbonated, has some liquorice, a lot of it. Still sweet but not so much at first, its coming out in later stages. Super strong bitter chocolate. Warming and excellent stuff for a cold day. Could be interesting to try a more aged version of this.

(Bottle) Black with toffee colored small head. Nice rich complex aroma - caramel, wood, port. Full bodied, sticky, creamy with velvety carbonation. The taste is exceptional, so rich and complex. Clearly this is a very strong beer; there’s plenty of alcohol but well integrated with rich flavours. It’s sweet - dark roast malt, port, raisins, dark chocolate. There’s a lot more going on - the cognac is distinct and there’s a pleasant dark burnt toffee bitterness in the finish. An extraordinary beer - it has many of the characteristics of drinking a fortified wine, with the balance of alcohol and rich fruity sweetness; however there’s much more than that as it has pleasant carbonation and a more complex and extensive range of flavours. Very impressive.

From a 375ml bottle on 10/5/2014. Pours not far off black with a small dark tan head. Has a very pleasant aroma of caramel, chocolate, vanilla, cognac, dough and a dash of coffee. The Flavours are huge with sweet milk chocolate and caramel most prominent. This is joined by quite a bit of soy, some vanilla, wood, prunes, cognac and a touch of honey. There’s some roasty bitterness at the back but the sweetness prevails here - it’s a real dessert job. Whilst there’s certainly some cognac and booze present, it’s actually super easy drinking for something that’s over 15%. The palate approaches sticky and the carbonation is quite lively for an impy. Damn this is one impressive and enjoyable brew - definitely the best Moon Dog I’ve had to date. And it’s an ode to the Fonz, who appears on the label. I give it the big thumbs up and an ’ayyyy’.

Bottle. Black with a tan head that rapidly retreats to the rim. Aroma of Cognac, molasses, heavily roasted coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, soy sauce and yes truffles if you squint a bit. Oily. Grapey, dark berries, bitter finish with some oranges and spices (including salt). In between there is a stout that’s got lots of dark sugars and quite intense roasted malt and coffee. It doesn’t quite get elbowed aside but shares the limelight a bit too much with the spirit for my liking. Couldn’t pick the truffles at all once I’d started drinking it. Alcohol is not all that obvious which is surprising given the prominence of the Cognac and its strength. Avoids so many things that might have made it awful but never quite grabbed me.
