Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a relatively dry ale with rich nutty colour and palate of beech nuts, almonds and walnuts.

Bottle. Pours clear nutty reddish brown with small white head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, raisins and dried figs. Taste is initial light sweet, then medium bitter, medium sweet and light acidic. Body is oily with lively carbonation. Finish is long and bitter/sweet with notes of caramel, nuts, dried fruit, milk chocolate and chalk. Very well balanced.

Look: clear chestnut brown with a light beige frothy head.
Aroma: fruity, esters, light toast, nutty.
Taste: fruit/plums, caramel/sweetness, light nutty spicy bitterness.
Nice, but a bit too heavy on esters. Some hop flavour will be nice to have too.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein dunkel rötlichbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch röstmalzig, nussig, Karamell. Geschmack röstmalzig, Karamell, nussig, leicht schokoladig.

In my humble opinion, there is no easier beer to drink than this one. Pours a cola-like brown into the nonick pint glass, normal pillowy head that lasts for awhile, nice lacing on the glass. Nose of bready sweet malts, toffee, some roasted flavor, walnuts. Taste is liquid velvet, caramel, buttery toffee, absolutely delicious.

550 ml bottle. Pours clear mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of figs and brown sugar. Flavors of nuts, dried dark fruit, and roasted malt. Has a metallic hint but does not distract. Nice.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Supermarket Liquor Fort Collins. Pours a hazy, reddish orange appearance with a tan head. A bit roasty, big cookie, caramel, somewhat earthy hoppy aroma. Burnt toffee, cookie, lightly roasted coffee, hazelnut flavor. A bit thin and possibly a touch dated but still pretty good.

Bottle. A- Nuts, malts, bread. A- Brown color, hazy liquid, minimal head. T- Slightly malty, nutty. P- Medium body, thin texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- A fine brown ale. The nut tones are very prominent. The British are some of the best brown ale makers and this shows it.

Pours brown and leaves the same colored body that gives a spectacular one finger foamy off white head. Some nice spotty foamy lacing is observed. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising; the aroma has a fair amount of nuts, caramel malts up front, hops slightly in the background; the flavor is exactly the same; its fairly easy on the palate with a good creaminess all around; overall well worthy to come back to
