Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a relatively dry ale with rich nutty colour and palate of beech nuts, almonds and walnuts.

5% bottle from Rakuten served in a pint glass. Slightly reddish-brown pour with a light beige head & a sweet caramel & molasses aroma. The beer is medium bodied with a zesty carbonation & a sweet syrupy flavor that gives you caramel, maple, molasses & some nutty notes in the finish. Pretty good, a cut above the average English ales I’ve had in Japan.

Usual 550ml Bottle: BBD Apr 14, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 17th Nov 13. Looks impressive: clear body of redwood (teak/mahogany), a deep blanket of beige foam sits on top, nothing moves as you stare at the glass, apart from carbonation bubbles rising through the body. One of those moments to savour. The nose is dry, as is the taste: malts rule the roost here, nutty (obviously by the name) and slightly over roasted in smell and flavouring. This is a fine beer and I’m glad I found it after years of not having any since my youth. An old school Brown with nothing fancy or clever about it, just good ingredients and blended well, then left alone to sort it’s self out.

Poured a medium brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas and tastes of caramel, some nuts, and lighter chocolate.

Clear Reddish Brown Color, Good Head, Light Spotty Lacing. Faint Malt Aroma. Lightly Toasted Malt, Lightly Bitter. Over carbonated, watery, with light creaminess at the end. Did not get nuts nor sweet sugars. Dry finish with slight sour aftertaste. Drinkable, nothing too fancy. Classic example of lost in translation... When I see Brown Ale, I think of thick, sweet American version that is not too far from Porters, while here I get Toasted Darker Shade of Lager... Meh... I’ll pass Next Time...

Bottle from Asao. Nice nutty nose, caramel, light fruit, some grassy hop. Sweet and malty but not cloying, fruity tang, lightly hopped but rather dry finish. Nice.

Poured from a bottle it is a reddish brown ale with a disappearing head. The aroma is of coffee and caramel. The taste is a strong rosary coffee flavor that lingers on the palate.

From a 550 ml bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours a clear cola brown with a tan head. Malty nose with flavors of toasted nuts with some licorice and caramel. Highly carbonated. Crisp, dry finish.

Bottle - Malty, brown sugar and a bit vinous. Clear amber brown with a rich beige head. Dark sugars, toffee, toasted malts and I get a slight vinous sourness (bad bottle?). Finish is long and like some others I don’t really get the nuts.

tasted in August 2011. Nose not sticking out much. Color is brown with a thick creamy head. Malt is very tasteful and showing good complexity with caramel, hazelnut and wood accents. A good bitterness as finish. Good traditional English Ale.

Overly sweet brown beer, with some nutty characteristics, along with the toasted malt. Dark brown with minimal beige head. Medium weight, somewhat dry finish and sweetness lingering afterwards.
