Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a relatively dry ale with rich nutty colour and palate of beech nuts, almonds and walnuts.

Bottle. Pours clear copper brown with airy but stable beige head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel and hops. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt, interspersed by regular hoppy notes. Bitter finish with a touch of roast and nuts. A very nice Brown Ale.

Bottled, 0.55l. Clear ruby brown color with large frothy light brown head and flat visible carbonation. Aroma is nutty, caramel, light chocolate, light herbal hoppy with some cask wood hints. Taste starts with rich and sweet maltiness, then followed light acidic with long spicy mouthfeel. Finish is heavy astringent hoppy with moderate strong alcohol note. Full body, thick texture and flat carbonation in palate. So good to go nuts :)

550 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ T-Drinks. BBF 01/2014. Pours a ruby hued dark brown with a small tanned head. Nose is simple brown sugar, thick malts, light molasses, light caramel. Taste is feels a bit empty to me, simple sweet sugar & malts with leaves and some iron-like notes, caramel, very cheap coffee, touch soy sauce, improves slightly towards the end with a brief and interesting nut sweetness. Overall this was a letdown for me. Far too simple, little going on and only very mild promises. Not sure why this is seen as a classic maybe it used to be better but these days? Or maybe I am just not the biggest fan of Brown Ale’s, at least it is a lot better than Newcastle’s.

550 ml bottle into imperial pint glass, bottled on 8/21/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big caramel, molasses, raisin, toast, toffee, brown bread, light nuttiness, floral, and toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and moderate fruity notes. Taste of big caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, raisin, brown bread, floral, nuttiness, light roast, and toasted earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, raisin, brown bread, floral, nuttiness, light roast, and light earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity of malt flavors with moderate fruitiness; very robust for 5% with no cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent english brown ale! Great balance and complexity of robust flavors; and very smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bouteille 500ml. (2006)

(bottle, 35.5cl) Clear, chestnut-brown colour with a big and tanned foamy head. Mildly toasted and earthy malty aroma with caramel, nutty notes, backed by berry-fruity and citric hops. Mildly bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Earthy and delicately toasted malty taste with fruity hoppy accents; moderately dry and mildly bitter finish with nutty malt and fruity hops. Pleasant. 11.II.13
