Existent represents the philosophy behind Stillwater Artisanal. We strive to define ourselves through our passion and sincerity while accepting that not all aspects of life are readily explainable. To manifest this ideology we present an ale of intrigue. Deep & dark though deceptively dry, braced by a firm yet smooth bitterness and accented with an earthy hop and mild roast aroma. This is an ale for you to define..

’and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.’ –Nietzsche

750ml bottle

Pours dark reddish brown with a massive foamy head. Aroma has notes of spices, yeast, earthy herbs, licorice and malts. Taste is quite untypical with notes of berries, spices, malts and earthy herbs. Hints of slight sourness. Finish is dry and fruity. Okay, quite untypical Belgian styled ale.

Dark brown - fizzy beige head - nose is earthy and moderately acidic - mild toffee sweetness, sage, hazelnut, raisin - a little bit of metallic and vegetal notes, but they are fall enough in the background to ignore most of the time - carbonation is a little full in the mouth, as seems to by typical of stillwater brews - flavor is medium dry, with medium to high acidity - a bit of raisin, fig, roasted nuts - some interesting tannic character - some dry cocoa in the finish - an interesting brew, but the acidity is a bit high and the slight flaws in the nose keep me from loving it.

Small beige head. Nearly opaque reddish black-brown body. Nutty fruity earthy aroma with chocolatey alcohol notes. Dry-sweet fruit and earth taste with dusty nutty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish mealy chocolatey roasty earthy aftertaste with nutty funky notes. Harmonic and subtle. Highly drinkable. (0.75l bottle, Håndverkerstuene, Oslo.)

750 ml bottle bought @ Khioskh. Pours hazy deep chestnut brown with a big thick gray head. Smell is very fruity with mandarin oranges and peaches in sugar syrup, burnt sugar and yeast. Taste is dry, sweet and rather bitter with bitter chocolate, ash, caramel, yeast and tar. Finish is dry and bitter. Quite interesting beer that went well with some Roquefort blue cheese.

Bottled@Man In The Moon, Stockholm. More or less black colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is mild roast, rather hoppy as well as some earthy and mild sourish notes. Flavour is roasted malts, quite rich on the hops as well as the floral notes. Something like Black IPA meets a Saison....

Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival. Aroma of milk chocolate anbd coffee. Sweet with full body and spritzy mouthfeel. Caramel and tar, syrup and treacle. Some spicy hops comes through in the finish. Not much interesting here.

750mL bottle, pours an unusually (for this style) dark, dark brown / black with a big, foamy beige head. Aroma is both funky and roasty, with a slight sourness and almost a lactic quality. Flavour is very rustic and earthy, with lots of funk, a noticeable milky quality, slight sourness and a bit of a metallic note. Milky, earthy finish. Quite odd, though enjoyable.

At ACBF 2011. Bit thick and syrupy on aroma. Some dryness in mouth. Some liquorice. Not my thing.
