Unusually light, agile, yet complex, Unicorn hasn’t changed in over a hundred years. It was originally brewed by Frederic for his father William, at the Unicorn Inn, from where the beer eventually took its name, and where the Robinsons Brewery still stands. Dripping with heritage, it’s a magnificent, thirst-quenching, thoroughbred bitter. The first of a bloodline that continues to this day.

slightly hazy golden colour, 1 inch creamy head; aroma of biscuit, toffee, grape and some grassy hops; taste of biscuit (maybe some apple pie as well), fruits, malty sweetness and some minimal hoppyness; not bad bitter

Bottle bought at the Moulsham Superstore, Molusham St, Chelmsford. Mid brown colour, caramel malt and a little fruit in evidence. OK but nothing to stand out.

Has a biscuit malt aroma, some in taste but also a mild pale flavour. Golden with a diminishing head. Quite dry in the palate.

Bottled 500ml. -Dark golden coloured, small to medium sized off-white head, mild bready nose with hint of caramel. Sweet malty, caramel and light herbal with discreet touch of hops in rather mild bitter finish. Nothing more nothing less than average.

Amber colour. Fruity, malty aroma. Toasty, biscuity malty flavour. Quite plain but would make an ok session bitter.

My third beer in one of my ’random beer evenings’ (Nov 2010). This beer came in an attractive 500ml brown bottle, posh labels too. Poured into an Abbot Ale tankard. The look is a clear amber one, bright and clean, on top an off-white blanket of foam. Good, thick and heavy lacing followed the beer down the glass as it’s level sank. The aroma is malty, semi-sweet molasses with fresh biscuits dipped into them. Very little hop presence in my nose, even though the rear label claimed it had a "distinctive hop aroma". The taste follows the smells very closely, but weakly. The hops getting in on the act with a sharpness not expected from the smells. It does however lack any true strenght of taste or flavour depth, leaning towards a bland feel to it. A disappointment to be honest.
