Bottle at Izuya. End of a long day rating... Golden colour with small white head. Aroma very grainy, sweet malt too, caramel. Taste similar, nice sweetness, caramel again, nice and drinkable.

Tap @ Furusatomatsuri (18.01.2019). Darker golden pour, super clean and some white foam on the top. Light malts and light fruits in the nose. Taste has a bit of citrus and some light bitterish sweetness. Light-bodied with low-medium bitterness. Clean and fruity. I guess Hideji does not brew too many ales but this one is not bad.

A last souvenir from the airport in Miyazaki. Hideji’s Shinkan no Pale Ale 5% it pours an opaque gold with a filmy off-white head. It’s got an earthy citrus hop aroma with an attractive underlying sweetness. Medium bodied with a sandpapery carbonation but good flavor of woodsy citrus and a balanced bitterness. A solidly satisfying pale ale.

Bottle from Mitsuya. Pours a murky orange with a small off-white head. Grass, lemon, white pepper and yeast on the nose. Taste is all yeast. Has a cue burn like scratchy taste from first impression through the finish. Way too much yeast. --- Beer merged from original tick of Shinkan no Pale Ale on 18 Oct 2015 at 20:25 - Score: 5

Bottle from Yamaoka. Caramel-malt aroma, slightly fruity and earthy, with relatively fragrant underlying citrus hops and yes, a bit of smoke. Medium copper color with a rather high head. Well balanced flavor with earthy amber malts, caramel, chocolate, and citrus hops. Hoppy, peppery, smokey finish is quite dry and clean. Great balance, really well made, if not particularly exciting. Could drink lots of it.

Bottled. Clear deep golden. Tangerine aroma. Medium sweet with rounded mouthfeel. Lots of tangerines, some caramelly malt, very subtle smoke. Fruity and quite hopy with medium bitterness. Good beer, but the smoke is so restrained that it is easy to miss it.

Yes, a pale ale and smoke. Think it might not work?? your probably right. Smoke is very subtle on top of some flowery hops and lingering tanergines. How this works with smoke, I don’t know. Not well balanced and a bit too hoppy for a smoked ale. Still its worth a try.
